Re: Is optimism bad?

I think human beings in general and modern human beings in particular have a tendency toward being overly optimistic. This can lead us into all kinds of foolishness, at the both personal ("it won't happen to me!") and the collective ("the economy is fundamentally sound; a rising tide lifts all boats...

Re: What's lineage, what is it for, & how does it work?

Lineage, like the concept of "tradition", is often an invention made in the present to legitimize certain practices or ideas by conjuring up an imagined past. Many radical innovations are dressed up in the language of tradition: a return to the roots, a hidden lineage now publicly declaring itself, ...

Re: plan to change temple symbol on maps

I find this troubling. Surely part of journeying to a new culture is experiencing their cultural norms, and the meaning that they invest in symbols, even if those norms and those meanings are strikingly different from one's own? The Japanese should leave it, swastikas simply do not mean the same thi...

I was sorry to hear about this, but grateful that he left us one final album before his parting. I knew he had an interest in Buddhism at one point in his life, but had no idea he had seriously considered ordaining.

May he have a fortunate rebirth.

Re: Spreading Buddhism to weaken armies?

This issue is clear cut in as much as a person has actual knowledge of Myanmar. Yes, it's an ethnic conflict between the Rohingya minority and the Rakhine people, and unfortunately some Buddhists (including monks) have gotten involved. Given that Burma is 80 to 90% Buddhist and only 4% Muslim (and ...

Re: Spreading Buddhism to weaken armies?

The problem with the Mongols is I don't think those guys could get off their horses and put down their arms long enough for Buddhism to have an impact on their culture during their reign. Mongolia is Buddhist and has been for centuries; in fact the title "Dalai" (as in Dalai Lama) is Mongolian and ...

Re: Santaka Sutta: To Ananda

I think that Techno Yogi's point is that Theravada is a particular school of Buddhism, while the term Hinayana refers to a class of teachings. Yes. I think of yanas as being like cars, or classes of cars, and sects as being like car companies. Most car companies offer a broad range of vehicles: spo...

Re: Buddhist Nazis?

I'm not so sure about the idea that Buddhism is anti-racist. In the Pali Canon at least, the idea of the four castes is rejected insofar as no caste is viewed as being inherently superior to any other, or being more spiritually attuned. In the Kannakatthala Sutta the Buddha says that members of any...

why do you care? Focusing in the needy is actually a pretty interesting development. Claiming that their leaders are Buddhas is a bit much, but it wouldn't be the first time a group claimed to be led by the likes of a great soul or a Bodhisattva. The leaders who they claim were Buddhas - Đoàn Minh ...

Giving a citation does in any way prevent the spreading of sutras. This does not require you to "chop up" anything; just put the name of the sutra and the translator and maybe a link at the end of whatever it is you're posting.

I'm familiar with the Wikipedia articles, thanks. I was wondering if anyone had any direct knowledge of this group and their practices beyond a Wiki summary.

And what makes you say they are a cult? In what sense are you using the word cult?

The man is a nutcase and is only "popular" with the tin foil hat crowd. I take it you made no preparations for Obama's failed Jade Helm federal takeover. What kind of guns do you own?
