Re: What it means to be a ngakpa

In Tibet people would give offerings to the ngagpas and ngagpas live off the offerings. Brahmins also live off offerings. Do you know any Western ngagpas who can afford to live off just doing pujas? Who cares? It is not a career decision for me. Anyway: Tilopa pounded sesame seeds for a living. Cam...

... there is very little market for the skills of Ngakpas in the West, and I doubt there will ever be much of one.
A market? WTF does a market have to do with things? If I make offerings to the naga, or sang to appease local spirits, or... I do it because of supply and demand???

Does your's smell bad too? It seems many people don't like the strong smell.
It smells smoky but the smell does not linger like the perfumed soaps. No, it doesn't really dry my skin out.

I'll investigate the pine tar. Is it turpentine's brother, or turpentine's cousin?
Cousin. Turpentine is made from pine sap (they harvest it here on the island). Pine tar is what you get when you burn pine wood slowly. It forms when the smoke condenses on the inside of chimney tubes.

No, you are not wasting your time. And it is good that you are asking about things before committing yourself to them.

Re: Psoriasis

What will work depends on what is causing it. Almost everybody that has been cured will quote a different treatment. Have you tried pine or birch tar soap? It works really well for other skin conditions. Buy the proper stuff from a Baltic country. The EU produced stuff (like Wright's Coal Tar Soap) ...

What if you have only received the lung in Tibetan? There's a fair chance many people could mispronounce the English (or French, German, Spanish, Greek... or any other language).
I remember Rinpoche having a good hard laugh over my Greek-English pronunciation of a Tibetan sadhana.

Re: what is your approach to Dharma?

I think that rory is asking if the teachings are for sale. If so, then her questions are completely relevant and should be clarified directly and immediately. No, they are irrelevant. This year I am organising, for the second time, a "seminar" with our teacher Loppon Ogyan Tanzin Rinpoche. Last tim...

Re: What it means to be a ngakpa

You're taking that comment more than a little out of context. I'm quite aware that for certain Dudjom tersar practices these are samaya objects. My point was that for many people these days they are just cosplay, which is silly, and that the OP shouldn't want them for that reason. Well, we don't kn...

Re: Spirit attack

Right, I think that Varis has received enough advice (some good and some awful) and that it is quite clear that he should seek advice from a proper teacher for his spiritual problem and a doctor for his medical issues. I understand that people are offering advice motivated by compassion for Varis's ...

Re: What it means to be a ngakpa

Actually there are a series of SPECIFIC empowerments and blessings associated with the ngakpa accoutrments: clothing, ritual implements, even the consort. The teacher then decides how and when one should use these. For example: our teacher (Loppon Ogyan Tanzin Rinpoche) wants us to wear the zen and ...

Does it require $ to get teachings/empowerments from Nyingma teachers for lay people? Do you have to go to a specific place that costs money?

Re: Spirit attack

To all those offering advice: If you do not know what the source of the problem is, how can you offer practice advice?

Varis needs to speak directly to a teacher and possibly to a medical specialist.

Have you seen a doctor? Yes, multiple. And...? I am not asking for details, just wondering if they helped at all. If you are taking medication. If the medication is helping. If the condition you are diagnosed with (or the medication you are taking) leads to the symptoms you are describing: lack of ...

I am not rationalizing anything. These are the facts.
Ownership is not a fact, it is a mode of relation to an object based on a particular philosophy/world view.
