Re: Chan Texts: Translations & Studies

I am pretty sure he does too. No doubt about it. Kind of paradoxical to have a master of nothing though, isn't it? So quite obviously there is something there. I asked him a similar question once, along the lines of what are you a master of? He picked up a cup of tea and drank some. So there is som...

Hi Ariadne (nice name),

Where are you currently based? There may be other sangha nearby, that members here are aware of, that you could hook up with.

Re: Sarlo's Guru Rating Service

Don't take it too seriously. There is a lot of work behind it, I am sure. The sheer number of the gurus is stunning. Hundreds of them, whom I have never heard of, or maybe even close to one thousand. There is a message in their number, and in the attitude and treatment of them. You could never do t...

Salmonella poisoning can kill you.

I am sure Osho knew about the plot. I think Sheela is a scapegoat. A complicit wacko of the nth degree, granted, but a scapegoat too.

Re: Chan Texts: Translations & Studies

I'm sure it says plenty of things, that anyone can interpret whichever way they want. My teacher, Zen Master Dae Kwang Sunim, commented on this once. He said " Zen is unique in that it promotes no teaching and no techniques .". Pretty sure he knows what he's talking about given that he's been a zen...

For the sake of honesty, I should add that it took me nearly as long to recover from some of the inner dynamics of CTR's set up.
The nature of the teachings received was not the same however.
Yeah, well... At least CTR didn't try to poison a whole county...

Re: Chan Texts: Translations & Studies

[talking about someone else's position] the Zen doctrine is no doctrine, which is still a doctrine. Is no doctrine a doctrine? "What are your doctrines." "None. We don't have any." "Is that doctrine?" "No." AKA Diamond sutra chapter 7, which is a very popular sutra in zen :) I wonder what the Platf...

Re: Bodhisattva Rhetoric?

Basically a Bodhisattva willingly engages in actions that relieve the suffering of other beings, but generates the causes and conditions for their own rebirth in samasra (mainly because they may engage in actions which are contrary to the teachings in the Noble Eightfold Path). What you are not unde...

Unfortunately the whole practice is just the dharani in English transliteration , with no title and the advice to add on all the standard prayers before and after.

[talking about someone else's position] the Zen doctrine is no doctrine, which is still a doctrine. Is no doctrine a doctrine? "What are your doctrines." "None. We don't have any." "Is that doctrine?" "No." Yes, mainly because it goes a lot further than that. There is a whole explanation as to why ...

Re: Chan Texts: Translations & Studies

Really? There is nothing grasping or identifying about setting the record straight as to how Zen is actually traditionally taught. It is people who want Zen to follow their ideals and thus misrepresent it who have that problem. I am far from free of the three poisons, but that is manifest in other ...

Re: Sarlo's Guru Rating Service

One may ask: What are the criteria for rating the teachers? To which the reply would be: whatever pleases the blog owner (or fulfills his agenda). Especially given: Where I'm Coming From First off, and most important i suppose, my religious history. I was raised as rather an agnostic Canadian, with ...

Re: Chan Texts: Translations & Studies

Does Zen follow the Four Noble Truths? If so what texts do they get it from? Classically, Zen does not "follow" or posit any doctrines. Except maybe that it doesn't follow any doctrines. "A separate transmission outside the teachings, not establishing words and letters, pointing directly at the hum...
