True Pure Land and Parinirvana
Hi all can anyone elucidate the idea of parinirvana in Pure land, especially true pure land. I understand that parinirvana is when an enlightened being is released from the last of his/her karmic fruit and that that occurs at the end of the life of a person when they first become enlightened. From a...

Re: Is this the Heart Sutra?
Thanks for your replies on this. A friend of mine was given it while on a trip to china. He was given this as a present on a visit to Lin yi monastery. So well done on spotting that. He is a surgeon and was quite tickled to learn it is called the Heart Sutra. Incidentally, doesn't sutra and suture c...

Is this the Heart Sutra?
A friend showed me this lovely present they were given when they went to China. I can't read Chinese but it seems to me to be the Heart Sutra, but too short to be the Diamond Sutra. Can anybody confirm?
Many thanks in advance

Mahamudra and tantra
Sorry if this is an old chestnut but.... Could anyone comment on the relationship between mahamudra and tantra? I couldn't find any useful threads on first glance. I was wondering, is the insight aspect of mahamudra tantric or more akin to theravada vipassana? Looking forward to your replies and hel...

Re: How do gay Buddhists explain this one?
So there are a lot of gay-friendly sanghas around nowadays. Yet again I find contradictions between what so many Buddhists believe and what is in the sutras: "If sex is practised under the inappropriate times (times not allowed by precepts), [at] inappropriate place[s] (places not allowed by p...

Re: Pure Land & Suicide
Ok, So we seem to be reaching consensus that beings do indeed come back from the Pure Land to help other beings. But what about Shin Buddhism which teaches that the Pure Land is the final aim. A Shin buddhist, who believes in the literal metaphysical reality of Amida and the WPL, also believes that ...

Re: Pure Land & Suicide
I dont see how can we come back as Boddhisatvas to this world. If Pure Land is filled with people, why cant we see, today on Earth, monks "comming" from Pure Land? There should be at least a dozen of guys on Earth that are indeed Bodhisatvas from Pure Land. Good question Nosta. I was just...

Re: Pure Land & Suicide
Gosh, ginger, your quote of me was a little weird. Your question was not distinct from my previous post But no, thank you. I am not contemplating suicide in the the least. It is merely an academic question that someone asked me that I have no idea how to respond to. Any help responding to the possib...

indeed, nosta. the question is intended to compare the theology with the social reality of it, so both points of view are welcome.

Pure Land & Suicide
Dear all someone asked me a question that I really don't know how to answer. Is there a risk, or indeed a history, of people committing suicide in order to hasten their entry in to the Pure Land? It is popularly believed here in england that there is a high rate of suicide in Japan or that suicide i...

Re: Dharma Protectors
Hi bunny. Me again. I think I pretty much said something similar on your learning more thread, but hey... I would say most Asian Buddhists have dharma protectors (although the term 'dharma protector' is mostly a Tibetan one). In Asia Buddhists feel it is very important not to ignore the local deitie...

Re: Learning more
Hi bunny. I see that you are from northern Ireland. Me too. Derry. I would recommend a visit to jampa ling in cavan if you can. They also might have a chapter in Derry. Personally I would avoid the kadampa centre in Belfast for two reasons. firstly, they are very anti dalai lama (whom I personally f...

Pure Land in China
Hi folks. I am relatively ignorant of the history of Pure Land and I was wondering if someone could fill me in. Was Pure Land in China a distinct sect with its own temples and priests/monks? I know in Japan it certainly was. I get the feeling that many Chinese buddhists do not delineate between Pure...

Three marks of Existence question
Greetings all How are the three marks of existence expressed and taught in the gelug system? i know that they are included in the 'four seals/tenets' but is that the only way in which gelugpas encounter the three marks? are the three marks a sutra teaching or purely pali abhidhamma teaching? any tho...
