Re: Buddha's mind (citta) and consciousness (viññāṇa)
The terms consciousness 'viññāṇa' and mind 'citta' are the same meaning in SN/SA suttas. See p. 174 in Choong Mun-keat's The Fundamental Teachings of Early Buddhism.

Re: 一心三觀, 一心法界, 一真法界
I think the One Mind/One Truth is the same meaning in those terms (一心三觀 , 一心法界, 一真法界). Both Tiantai and Huayan schools are in the direction of Vijñānavāda ‘teaching of consciousness’ (Yogācāra tradition) with the ‘metaphysical mind’. One Mind/One Truth is teaching that phenomena are manifestations o...

一心三觀, 一心法界, 一真法界
Is One mind/One Truth the same or different meaning between “ One Mind with Three Observations” (Yixin Sanguan一心三觀) in Tiantai Buddhism and “ One Mind or One Truth/Reality with Dharmadhātu” (一心法界 Yinxin Fajie or 一真法界 Yizhen Fajie) in Huayan Buddhism? Is One mind/One Truth in Huayan Buddhism the same...

Re: The main issues that caused the split of the early Buddhist sects, and then between Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism
... I read the appended paper of Choong Mun-keat. He does not present the view of Sarvastivada at all, for the cause of the first schism. I.e. he does not mention the theses of Mahadeva. Which I believe have really existed, and are the real cause. ... What is more, and contrary to what the pali tex...

Re: The main issues that caused the split of the early Buddhist sects, and then between Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism
" Second Buddhist council The historical records for the so-called "Second Buddhist Council" derive primarily from the canonical Vinayas of various schools. While inevitably disagreeing on points of details, they nevertheless agree that it was attended by seven hundred monks who met ...

The main issues that caused the split of the early Buddhist sects, and then between Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism
What were the main issues that caused the split of the early Buddhist sects/schools, leading to the break of Hinayana/Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism?

Re: What types of meditation did Shakyamuni teach in the sravaka canons?
I'm just wondering if there is a list somewhere of the different types of meditations the Buddha Shakyamuni taught in the sravaka canons. Regarding the teachings of meditation (such as insight meditation or others) in early Buddhism, which is closely relevant to the Buddha Shakyamuni in the earlies...

Re: Charles Patton translation of the Dirgha Agama, 30. Description of the World Chapter 12: The Origins of the World
Correct, the devas like Brahma and Indra are positions, not persons. Then who implored the Buddha to turn the wheel of Dharma after his enlightenment, when he was vacillating about whether to do so or not? A "position"? And the same could be asked of Shakra in all his many adventures. Bra...

Re: Agamas in Mahayana
The origin of the Yagacara doctrine can be found in SA ( Saṃyukta-āgama ), which is connected with the earliest Buddhism. The sūtra-mātṛkā (sūtra matrix, 契經, 摩呾理迦 or 本母), essentially a commentary on a portion of SA, found in the Vastusaṅgrahaṇī of the Yogācārabhūmi , follows the sequence of SA. This...

Re: According to Tibetan tradition the coronation of Asoka as 160 or 116 years after the death of the Buddha?
The text, Bhavya’s Nikayabheda-vibhanga-vyakhya [Treatise on the Schisms], is likely located in Tengyur ("Translated Treatises/Shastras"), another section of the Tibetan Buddhist canon. It may have five versions, Derge, Cone, Narthang, Peking, and Golden.

Re: According to Tibetan tradition the coronation of Asoka as 160 or 116 years after the death of the Buddha?
It will be very useful for the date of the Buddha if someone who knows the Tibetan language could find out and tell us which Tibetan versions of the text indicate 160 or 116 years after the Buddha's death the coronation of Asoka has taken place. If more Tibetan versions of the text give either one o...

Re: Ven. Yinshun: Samyutta/Samyukta Buddhism
According to Ven. Yinshun, Saṃyukta-āgama/Saṃyutta-nikāya was not at first being termed as nikāya or āgama, but generally named the ‘Connected Discourses’ 相應教 Saṃyukta-kathā . About the term Saṃyukta-kathā , see p. 899, note 21 in the above-mentioned paper (2020) by Choong Mun-keat. Calling the Saṃ...
