Re: Your gender and sexuality

... The earliest attempts at understanding homosexuality, i.e. identifying it as something unique, really only arrive in the 19th century with the notions of inversion - which is more or less correct according to modern science.... Whoah whoah whoah. Inversion? I wish I was laughing hysterically, b...

Dzongsar Khyentse in NYC, April 18th

Siddharta's intent posted this earlier today: http://www.siddharthasintent.org/2013/09/public-talk-it-depends.html His first appearance on the East Coast in a VERY long time. If anybody is going, and is driving eastbound I-80 into NYC or, in fact, in any other direction, it'd be great to rideshare. ...

Re: Your gender and sexuality

I'd like to take issue with some of the first knee jerk responses way back at the beginning of this thread... which basically amounted to "I don't want to think about this stuff" "It's none of my business," "Why do we need to talk about it? This has nothing to do with Buddhism," "Can't we just prete...

Re: Who has lived as something other than a worker-consumer?

Dear Thrasymachus, I've read a lot of your posts on here with some interest because it's clear to me that you are also a radical and definitely somebody who feels the nausea with capitalism and patriarchy that I do. I lived in anarchist co ops and various forms of radical community for a long time, ...

 well. With my degree of doubts, I'm gonna have a highly materialistic approach to accumulation....I.E. it's not gonna take until I do 1 million of everything :P

If I had to say a yes or no..

no, only because Nagarjuna said the wise don't even dwell in the middle! So...by extension...even impermanence isn't necessarily impermanent?

Re: Bodhgaya Photos

Awesome!

Yeah I've heard that Bodhgaya's surroundings are some of the gnarliest in India.
I wish there were reconstructions of what Nalanda looked like when all those foundations and capitals had stuff built on top of them still! What a magnificent complex it must have been :D

Re: More Trungpa talk

I went through all fourteen pages. Once, about 10 years ago, i -already some years in vajrayana- was told to read "Cutting through spriritual materialism". I was blown away. It was -and still is- the most concise, dense, straight, practical, clarifying, straightening book i have ever read not only ...

Re: Trungpa's NO

this is a great poem , its a discussion of the fundamental teaching its the ground of all, the big NO. Emptiness , Samantabhadra , Buddha Nature Tsewang This is sort of the idea I got from my first reading of it. It seemed to reach far beyond its original context of caution, reprimand, and wrathful...

Re: 9 cleansing breaths

Do you have a teacher who can show you? Without one, you probably shouldn't be doing guru yoga

If you do have one but are just too far or something, you might need to look up a video. Like mudras, it's almost impossible to accurately instruct somebody how to do this in text.

Re: Can dharma alone make life worth living?

I have to chime in only because I had such a simple answer to this: yes. I was morbidly depressed on and off for years. By the time (right before) I found a teacher, I was ideating suicide on a daily basis. Dharma isn't the cure for that--you need therapy too if it's really that bad. Practice doesn'...

Dukngal Rangdrol and Om Mani Peme Hung Hri

I've been told that Nyingmapas generally say the six syllable mantra with the seed syllable "Hri" at the end, which is how I've practiced for two years. However, I'm also aware that this is the mantra for the standing Chenrezig yidam practice and the 1000 arm chenrezig. Is it still the same? Do I ne...

Re: filling a statue?

Devotionary, The Tibetans live in a world totally populated by disincarnate spirits. That's their world-view. They won't leave any ordinary cup turned right side up or uncovered lest some spirit comes to nest in it. While this world-view helps to build constant mindfulness in terms of watching what...
