Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

Personally, I am glad life has no meaning -- it would be completely depressing if it did. I would have thought that one of the terrible events in this weeks news - the latest mass school shooting - is terrible because of what it means . And it’s also terrible because the perpertrator apparently did...

Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

Even for extremely experienced people, it can be a struggle to shift from seeking for meaning to practicing to relinquish attachments to such ideas. The topic has never been about this. Even newbies know that grasping BAD! Does it seem like a good idea to tell such a person that life is meaningless...

Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

eschewing the intricacies of emptiness when someone misunderstands the concept from the get-go is probably the best course of action. Considering a majority of people do not actually understand them anyways. But especially relevant when people find themselves put off to certain ideas due to not bei...

Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

“It is a double perspective: one understands both the conventional and ultimate without being attached to either one. This is because one sees how meaning exists by virtue of a relative opposite: meaninglessness. In the absence of meaning, there is no substantial non-meaning to cling to either. One...

Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

If life has meaning, then it would be meaningless to seek liberation from cyclic existence aka life. Can you explain why? Jesse has kindly offered his explanation. My argument is based on the relationship between the purpose of the Dharma and the purpose of life. The Buddha taught that the "source"...

Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

Buddhism is meaningful only because life, i.e. cyclic existence, is meaningless. Buddhism teaches that life is suffering, not that it's meaningless. If I may, Buddhism essentially teaches both, but I think some language should be clarified. Buddhism teaches particularly that Samsara is suffering, a...

I'm sorry for your loss, I can't imagine how I'd feel if my brother dies before I do. I might be weak, but I think I'd prefer to die first before my family members.

What's not to love about animals? I tend to like cats more though, well maybe about the same. My favorite thing about animals is their honesty. Outside of a few tricks they learn to get food, and attention they are pretty much purely honest creatures.

Terrifying Development in AI/Fake News

Some sites I read: https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/a-to-z/h/hearing-voices https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/psych-unseen/201508/is-it-normal-hear-voices It is the most common type of hallucination in people with psychotic disorders. Funny as it sounds; It's called the Tetris Effect, or Tetris Syndrome http://howtolucid.com/the-tetris-effect/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_effect The Tetris effect occurs when people devote so much time and attention to an activity that it begins to pattern their thoughts, mental images, an...

Re: Potential for War in Korea: Causes and Conditions

I don't believe anything will happen. Everyone has too much to lose, and absolutely nothing to gain. North Korea Collapsing is Bad for China, Bad for NK, and Bad for the USA who financially backs SK, no-one (intelligent) really wants it to happen. However, Militarily It would allow the USA to positi...

Re: agitated and upset after meditating out of house

It could be any number of things, For one, are you using meditation to alleviate irritation/agitation? If so, it could simply be that you are more aware of those moods after meditating, or it could be that you are more aware of something that was already there, to begin with (Even if you weren't spe...

It's nice and all that you purport to be more informed than the medical community while linking no relevant credible research, but I think I'll trust peer reviewed research. Everything that you mention is a cultural advancement, and does not apply to basic biology. Biology is a science. For example...

Pretty simple... Biologically a female is a biological entity with two X chromosomes. While a male has a XY chromosome combination. (Sorry, there are only two known sexes as far as biology is concerned. No, real biologists know that it is a lot more complex than that. Here (from Scientific American...

Re: Join us at the 8th World Youth Buddhist Symposium, FREE hotel and food provided!

Well, once AI becomes so proficient at (Everything), there will be lots of time for practice because there won't be any work left for humans to do. Machines ran by AI will be doing literally, everything. The AI will even maintain (and upgrade) it'self, so AI researchers will be out of work as well.....
