Re: Psychoanalysis

During his life the founder of AA, Bill W., proudly wrote about the 12 Steps being incorporated into some form of Buddhism in Japan. He did not say which kind of Buddhism however. In any case apparently he did not see the 12 Steps as being Christian specific.

Re: Are sentient beings trapped on their home planet?

Are sentient beings trapped on their home planets until they attain enlightenment? Nope. If we blow this place up we will have to go somewhere else. If so I really hope we don’t have to do the equivalent of that interminable dinosaur thing again. That took forever and was a total drag. It would be ...

Re: Psychoanalysis

Following that absolutist logic, things like the 12 steps are also just attempts to fix our samsara, and would fit under the broad category of stuff you are criticizing, but I know you think highly of those. I see the 12 Steps as an incomplete path. There’s no final liberation from “self” per se. B...

Re: Psychoanalysis

You’ve got to have your head screwed on somewhat straight in order to practice Dharma. If you’re too screwed up you’ll only make things worse. Having said that, my understanding is that your psyche is your unawareness and your limitations—your samsara. It is what you become liberated from . If so th...

Re: After achieving rainbow body?

Yes, otherwise why do we pray to Guru Rinpoche, Garab Dorje, etc. for blessings, empowerments, etc. I think they can manifest in multiple forms, places, and manners as need arises and karma permits. :good: Supplications related to Dharma or benefiting beings produce such uncanny results that I had ...

So do you guys accept the idea that realized beings are able to benefit sentient beings post-mortem?

Re: After achieving rainbow body?

I hav read that my teacher ChNN said that having a body of light one can actively help sentient beings -in samsara-. Whem i met him i asked him if one can "come back" after becoming a Buddha -total realization-, and he said yes. I hope you are not assuming that it is necessary to have physical form...

The passing away of one great teacher is far more significant than a dozen scandals or bankrupt monasteries.

Re: Revoking/undoing temporary refuge.

Let's say i took temporary refuge with a rinpoche and wanted to get out. How can i speed up the process of breaking up with them? Don’t visit him, and stop attending his public events. Be polite & try to leave on good terms. You do not pledge fealty to your lama. There are no “divorce” proceedings....

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

The only measure of success or failure is practitioners coming closer to liberation and, as a support for that, the dharma being preserved and made available in the world.

I hate to say it, but many of the most fervent "supporters" of each side in the conflict are continuing to act like schoolboys brawling over their football teams
“Lama Dramas” can be sooooo seductive!

Re: How to join a buddhist monastery?

...do the monks there need a scholarship to do a 3-year retreat, as they cannot keep working during that time? They either need to pay for the retreat or get someone else to pay for it. The possible scholarship I mentioned is offered by a separate foundation. It does not come directly from the mona...

Re: How to join a buddhist monastery?

I live at a Kagyu monastery that will support its monks in exchange for 40+ hours of work per week. Plus monks are supposed to help with the daily chanting. So it takes quite a lot of effort every day. What about long retreats? The 3 year retreats are on premises but behind locked gates. Both men's...

PSL has a complete shedra series. I haven't read these, but there other books are top notch. https://www.padmasambhava.org/chiso/books-by-khenpo-rinpoches/complete-psl-shedra-series-set-8-books/ These teachings include: the essential philosophical points of the Vaibhashika, Sautrantika, Mind Only (...

Re: Dalai Lama, visiting the Netherlands, gets tough with abusers

I don't know if I'm articulating these ideas well. I'm on the outside looking in on this Tibetan stuff. I am a Lama Norlha student. I live at his monastery. I have samaya with him and his sangha. I’m not going to be able to help you sort out his lama drama. I’ve not been able to definitively sort i...
