Re: The harms of Masturbation and Porn

It's midnight, I'm alone with nothing to do, time for you-know-what. Yay!!

Seriously, I just recalled a phrase by either Tilopa or Naropa:

"The problem is not enjoyment. The problem is grasping. Cut through your attachment, son."

Pleasure is not a problem per se.

Re: The harms of Masturbation and Porn

I agree with Malcolm. As far as I know, buddhism's "holistic" goal, as a whole, is to overcome ego. Buddhism is not exactly about telling other people what actions are "bad" or "wrong". To overcome ego there is more than one buddhist path and any advice will depend on s...

Re: How to set a Longde daily practice?

After ChNN's last retreat, the one on Longsal Longde, I am even more interested to try and add Longde to my practice routine, Longde seems to be fantastic actually, a supercallifragilistically flabberghasting boon to our practice. Just my opinion. But all transitory and perhaps distracting enthusia...

Re: Dzogchen VS Mahamudra..why?

Greg, yes I was generalizing a bit. But while I somewhat agree with your previous post that its not a good idea to intellectually get caught up in distinctions it is equally important to have a clear understanding of those distinctions because as most here know it is so easy to get caught up in one...

Re: K̶u̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶u̶ Buddhist culture in America

But the truth is that the concept of "expedient means" has been overused and abused, by followers . It's high time we started calling a spade a spade. Well, if you like "calling a spade a spade" and establishing how "the truth" should be presented, then you will like F...

Re: Why is Tibetan Buddhism more popular?

Maybe where you live, people get into TB because "marketing and merchandise". TB is normally well marketed it seems. Here in Singapore they take out whole magazine pages to advertise such and such a Rinpoche is giving such and such a rare empowerment. The merchandise aspect of TB can be s...

Re: Why is Tibetan Buddhism more popular?

What i mean is that it encompasses different levels and different teachings, and each one of it is of more appeal (and benefits best) a certain type of person and/or a certain circumstance in life. This is what i meant with "all colors and sizes". I think the marketing and merchandise are...

In other words, it comes in all colors and sizes so you can find one that fits best. Yes, it is a pretty customizable religion. As far as merchandise goes, too, you have ample selection to chose from. You can get all kinds of paintings, vajras, bells, Tibetan outfits, incense, books and so on. If y...

Re: Why is Tibetan Buddhism more popular?

My own two cents for what it's worth. Basically it comes down to the Tibetan diaspora. Truly amazing masters of the TB tradition were scattered to Europe and America. If this dispersal hadn't happened, Tibet would still be a insular country and far less would be known in the West about TB. Yes, i t...

Re: Sex and Death on the Road to Nirvana

Stuff like this is why I don't suggest to people to become Buddhists. I suggest people not to go into Tibetan Buddhism. Unless they really, really feel attracted to it. There are way too many pitfalls, too many ways to fall into the "spiritual materialism" trap, charlatans out there... Yo...

Re: K̶u̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶u̶ Buddhist culture in America

I've noticed a few Buddhist teachers that have the pomp and mannerisms of a hollywood kung fu master. That is your impression, not a fact or an objective assessment. A teacher can use skillful ways that would appear ridiculous to others. Yet, he might probably be doing it so it can be of benefit to...

Re: I just want to hear your opinion. No offenses please,

If you are a follower of Vishnu, worshipping Buddha as an avatar of Vishnu, then the abovementioned quotes are 100% true (within the specific religious framework). If you are a Buddhist, then realistically, the abovementioned quotes shouldn't concern you in the least. They are basically irrelevant ...

It is disappointing that she didn't recommend spiritual books of a higher calibre. Exactly. I know it's just my perception, but i can't help but see Oprah as the responsible for many quacks being popular on the US -- Deepak Chopra, and Eckhart Tolle. What's next? Osho books? ut I definitely see at ...

Re: Celibacy

It's unfortunate that some women feel they don't have much to offer other than their bodily attributes. Compassion arises when I comtemplate this deeply. This is the only way some know how to attract men, and many men will respond only to women of this sort. And this hit me as well. Good posting.
