Re: Question re: Asanga and the Bodhisattvabhumi

Mark Tatz also translated the 'Ethics' chapter of the Bodhisattvabhumi . I'm not sure where you can find it, but I had to read it for my MA recently. His translation is very good, especially considering it was 1986 or something. The entire Bodhisattvabhumi has now been translated into English by Art...

Re: Manichaeism in Tibet

P.S. No possible connection with OM MANI PADME HUM That's funny, that's not what Mani, the True Prophet of this Dark Age, told me. All seriousness aside though, that was mostly just for humorous effect. Obviously I wouldn't think that there was a direct link between the Mani Mantra and the Manichea...

Re: Manichaeism in Tibet

http://www.deepgnosis.org/qyamta/bonintro.html (again not sure how reliable this is...) With these facts at our disposal, it is reasonable to conclude that the Manichaean faith was once prevelent in the Tibetan lands before Bon and Buddhism became institutionalized. The Secret Teachings of Mani, mix...

Manichaeism in Tibet

I was thinking about ancient religions in Tibet, first along the lines of Bon, and then thought about Manichaeism. I read somewhere recently, I can't remember where exactly, that in the opinion of some, Manichaeism had been an influence on Tibetan Buddhism. I'm not sure to what extent that is true; ...

Re: Tibetan Lotus Sutra discussion

It is by Chogyal Phagpa, as the colophon to the text states. Sachen's works are confined to the first two volumes, of the SKB, Phagpa's works are the final three volumes. I didn't get to the colophon :). That clears it up, since it's a collection. Thank you! He lived from 1235–1280. Given Chogyel P...

Re: Tibetan Lotus Sutra discussion

It is actually by Chogyal Phagpa, it is found in volume 15 of the Sa skya bka' 'bum. That's strange, I was pretty sure it was listed as Sachen Kunga Nyingpo.. I found it on TBRC. Perhaps there's two commentaries? Or mistaken attribution? I would give the TBRC references but internet here is slow......

Re: Tibetan Lotus Sutra discussion

So I've made a separate page for the Commentary. Here it is: http://www.tibetanlotussutra.net/p/excerpts-from-commentary.html Once I get some more time to devote to the translation again (from May 29thish probably), I'll start translating more of both the Commentary and the Sutra. I added the follow...

Re: Tibetan Lotus Sutra discussion

Just a reminder that the previews and excerpts for the Tibetan Lotus Sutra and Commentary are at: http://www.tibetanlotussutra.net/p/previews.html Do note that there are 7 excerpts from the Commentary, below the ones for the Sutra. I suspect that the Commentary may be more interesting to many. I sho...

Re: Nichiren Buddhism Vs. Tibetan Buddhism

Here is the article I was referring to, 'The Integration of Sutra and Tantra' by Masao Ichishima. https://books.google.co.in/books?id=x_FJcRDXhfQC&pg=PA87&lpg=PA87&dq=integration+of+sutra+and+tantra+masao&source=bl&ots=uIHAglCHUA&sig=Xdt7miKYlyhUKTUiwYxjWPOFq44&hl=en&sa=X&ei=MDsaVfL2O46JuwTzpYLYDg&v...

Re: Nichiren Buddhism Vs. Tibetan Buddhism

This is not the same article by Masao Ichishima which I referenced before, but a related one which was given at Mt. Hiei, the 'Integration of the Sutra and Tantra at Mt. Hiei' http://www.culturabuddhista.it/joomla/index.php/insegnamenti/la-dottrina/238-integration-of-the-sutra-and-tantra-at-mt-hiei....

Re: Nichiren Buddhism Vs. Tibetan Buddhism

...vowed I would only practice a dharma that the sick and those with no means could practice. In all fairness, I think this is a new phenomenon and you don't find this in native Tibetan Buddhism hardly at all, in terms of charging for teachings. This would relate to what I think is a valid criticis...

Re: The Politics of Tibetan Buddhism

I pretty much agree with the other posters' comments. Focus on the Teachings. The Dharma is a medicine. My own post, although it was more 'negative', was meant to say, yes there are problems and they are pervasive and difficult. As pointed out, it depends on the extent and way in which you get invol...

Re: Xuanzang and Kuiji on Madhyamaka

Speaking of Kuiji... there's a lot of evidence that he is the author of the commentary to the Lotus Sutra which is found in the Tibetan Tengyur, but it's attributed to the Sri Lankan Pṛthivībandhu (sa'i rtsa lag). It is definitely however translated from Chinese as it says in the Tibetan title itsel...

Re: The Politics of Tibetan Buddhism

Firstly, the Tibetans are not some special holy Hobbit people who lived in a perfect society until it was wrecked by the Chinese.

I had a different experience the last time I paid a visit to Yak End.

Re: The Politics of Tibetan Buddhism

Some people's concerns are more about preservation (of institutions, resources, power, culture, tradition etc) than saving all sentient beings. The same is true in every religion, but the Tibetan traditions are particularly struck by problems right now because of their general political situation (i...

Re: Nichiren Buddhism Vs. Tibetan Buddhism

Actually, many of the approaches that Lamas in the west use with western students are a considerable departure from how they were taught, I agree that there is actually a great deal of potential flexibility within TB. Even a 'Nichiren type' Lotus Sutra movement might find a place within Tibetan Bud...

Re: Nichiren Buddhism Vs. Tibetan Buddhism

I do not recall where the interpenetration idea comes from in Tientai etc., as i'm just not that well versed, but I can say that genrally the above concepts with the possible exception of interpenetration are not dissimilar at all to aspects of Vajrayana, and the idea that they are (which I've hear...

Re: Nichiren Buddhism Vs. Tibetan Buddhism

that many forms of East Asian Buddhism, including Nichiren, would be seen as essentialist - in a manner well beyond the nuanced shentong view- from the viewpoint of Tibetan Buddhism, I'm not so sure. If by essentialist you mean 'too Yogacara', then perhaps generally yes but there are also many exce...

Re: Nichiren Buddhism Vs. Tibetan Buddhism

bordering on caricature. An undercurrent of disdain for less materially developed cultures as well - as if valid dharma can only come from the first world, and that people still using beasts of burden couldn't possibly have teachings for modernity. Johnny Dangerous, yes I pretty much agree with you...
