Re: Diamond Sutra in Sanskrit / Tibetan *characters*

Thanks very much. Using the information provided by Huifeng I was able to find a fragment of the Sanskrit version at http://www2.hf.uio.no/polyglotta/public/media/img_to_txt/121.gif . I'm not completely sure it includes the reference to the simile of the raft though. Perhaps there is no complete sur...

Diamond Sutra in Sanskrit / Tibetan *characters*

Hi, quick question - can anyone point me to an online version of the diamond sutra in Sanskrit or Tibetan characters (i.e. not transliterated)? I'm looking specifically for the part about the teaching being like a raft.

Thanks,

Jack

Tibetan question

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help on an issue of punctuation. I want to quote the first two lines - but only the first two lines - of the following: །འཁོར་བ་མྱ་ངན་འདས་པ་ལས། །ཁྱད་པར་ཅུང་ཟད་ཡོད་མ་ཡིན། །མྱ་ངན་འདས་པ་འཁོར་བ་ལས། །ཁྱད་པར་ཅུང་ཟད་ཡོད་མ་ཡིན།། Can anyone tell me which punctuation marks I should ...

Re: How real is conventionally real?

Hi, Another good quote, thanks. I get the impression you feel that the underlined part is incompatible with what Mipham says, is that right? I'm not sure whether to equate the "power of designation" of the second quote with the "mere imputation" of the first. I wonder whether HH ...

How real is conventionally real?

I should probably have said conventionally existent, but that would have spoilt the title... In a previous thread I posted part of a passage from Mipham's commentary on Chandrakirti's Introduction to the Middle Way (Padmakara Group Translation, p. 197). Here is a fuller version: If, despite the fact...

Re: Appearances without an underlying reality

Hi Jack, In brief, what you are asking as I understand it is whether there is an underlying reality to a quark and whether there is an underlying reality to a mental moment. The underlying reality you seek is not to be found in the world of phenomena that all observable physical and mental phenomen...

Re: Appearances without an underlying reality

In the case of the pot, it appears inherently existent to the mind, Does it?? I challenge you to find one person in a million who believes there is a pot that exists permanently, possessing its own self-sustaining substance. Who believes such a ridiculous thing? So why would Mahayana doctrine spend...

Re: Appearances without an underlying reality

Since no one believes in an "inherent" existence of a pot in the first place, that of course is not the point of Mahayana teachings . As long as one still grasps external objects existing independently of mind, albeit temporary and dependently originated, the delusion of external phenomen...

Re: Appearances without an underlying reality

Hi JD, Some info and a couple of links you may find helpful, or should keep you busy for a wee while at least Thanks - some interesting material there. The reference to Yogacara reminded me of something I'd previously read which has a bearing on my original post. It seems that part of the problem t...

Re: Appearances without an underlying reality

Whether phenomena appear to so-called ordinary people to be inherently existent is an empirical question. It is not something to be established or refuted by abstract argument. It is through argument that we can demonstrate that things appear inherently existent and how this is, while seeming so re...

Re: Appearances without an underlying reality

Thanks for your contributions, and muni I especially appreciated your quotation. In my posts I was careful to distinguish between conventional and ultimate existence, and to pose a specific question which has a specific place in the debate. This comes after the exposition of the basic Madhyamika pos...

Re: Appearances without an underlying reality

Jack, If your Mipham remark is from the Padmakara translation of his comments on Chandrakirti, please give us a page number. I suspect "underlying reality" means a reality which has a solid, inherent existence that is separate from our known reality. Anyway a quote from the text would hel...

Appearances without an underlying reality

Hi, I'm new here... I posted this on another forum and got some interesting responses, mostly from Theravadins, along the lines that I was asking the wrong question. On reflection I am still interested in my question so I am posting it here, where folks might be more receptive to Madhyamika generall...
