Re: Is there really a need for a pointing out instruction frpm
Identifying the clear part of the mind is not the same as a moment of resting in equipoise. In reality, this recognition might only last for a split second when beginning and even then, it takes some time to develop certainty. Intellectual understanding is only the very first step. Why do you think ...

Re: Is there such a thing as reverse tummo? (Inner cold?)
Without going in too much detail, not practicing tummo because of heat is one thing, But failing to train sufficiently and correctly enough to confidently identify bar-lung/par-lung is another. Some say the latter arises as a result of adequate training in the techniques of the former, and others sa...

Re: Dzogchen teachers and mental health
I don't know if he's been mentioned yet, but James Low, a Dzogchen teacher authorized to teach by C.R lama, worked for the NHS in the UK for some time. Some of the talks on his website are specifically related to the intersection of mental health and meditation/Dzogchen/mahayana view. B. Alan Wallac...

Re: The Role of Shamatha/Vipaysana in Dzogchen
It depends on how that mind is settled and calm, since meditation, as defined by Longchenpa (and following him, Chogyal Namkahi Norbu), is ultimately based on conceptual one-pointedness, and trekcho is not. If one has had DI, then an imperfect conceptual calm-abiding meditation can still eventually...

Re: ChNN and formal trekchö practice
Is anyone able to send a pic of the contents page(s) of the new Trekchod book from ChNNR? (In a pm)
I want to see how much of it is different from the recent Longsal commentary series on Trekchod.

Re: The Role of Shamatha/Vipaysana in Dzogchen
If one has had DI, then an imperfect conceptual calm-abiding meditation can still eventually make way for brief moments of trekchod, no? No. Longchenpa explicitly negates the idea that common śamatha can expose rig pa nakedly. If everyone was super high capacity like Longchnepa, Norbu Rinpoche and ...

Re: The Role of Shamatha/Vipaysana in Dzogchen
Does anyone argue that a calm and settled mind is an obstacle to trekchod It depends on how that mind is settled and calm, since meditation, as defined by Longchenpa (and following him, Chogyal Namkahi Norbu), is ultimately based on conceptual one-pointedness, and trekcho is not. i dare to say that trekcho ain't a practice. ain't an effort. non-effort is not the same as non-dilligence. Re: The Role of Shamatha/Vipaysana in Dzogchen
1) Not to complicate things, but is it possible to separate the scriptural definition of shamatha from a state of quiescence/calm abiding? Does anyone argue that a calm and settled mind is an obstacle to trekchod ,considering both the mental and energetic results that can arise from shamatha? (assum...

Re: The Role of Shamatha/Vipaysana in Dzogchen
I guess it comes down to how someone categorizes shamatha. Agreed. I'm sure it is sometimes used in relation to stillness/movement/noticing, and stability/steadiness as others have mentioned. It may not be Dzogchen Proper, but to insist Shamata has no relative or semantic relationship with Dzogchen...

I don't really have a horse in this race to be honest. If a Dzogchen practitioner finds Alan and his teachings beneficial for any aspect their study and practice, then so be it  If they don't, then so be it. He is obviously connected with many many good practice lineages and people are free t...

If someone is saying achievement of perfect Shamatha is a pre requisite for Dzogchen I can see the complaint, but not even BAW does that.
