Re: Can any one help me know if I was born on Guru Rinpoche Day?

Way to encourage someone, guys.
I did wonder if this was some sign that I should look more into Buddhism at least

Re: Can any one help me know if I was born on Guru Rinpoche Day?

I don't know about the 10th day thing but with an interest in Guru Rinpoche and a night time experience like that, you should definitely continue learning about Buddha Dharma at a pace you are comfortable with. It's worth pointing out that Rinpoche's aren't bound by birth to special calendar days. I...

Re: ‘Dharmas do not arise’

As far as the reprogramming is concerned - it really is a matter of neural pathways, which come from another way of seeing. Actually I think that has been backed up by research in neuroplasticity, some which grew out of dialog between Buddhists and neuroscientists. Samskaras, habitual cognitions, a...

Re: Sleep Awareness?

Yes. But you need pretty stable samadhi and non distracted unwavering lucidity in waking life to have a chance at night. That and having been introduced to the nature of your mind by a qualified teacher. Thankfully lucid dreaming is something anyone can learn to practice in the meantime.

Re: Nagarjuna and the chariot argument for emptiness

The rice seedling sutra is a vitamin worth taking when studying 'external' dependent origination / the emptiness of phenomena. The 8 metaphors of illusion can facilitate more understanding too.

Re: OBERF - Out of Body Experience Research Foundation

:hi:

The scientific community tends to be deaf when it comes to anecdotal reports on out of body experiences despite the astronomical ammount of them out there.

Graham Nichols is a good one to look for as he does his utmost to progress scientific testing in this area with some 'verified' o.b.e's.

Re: Mind-streams: Separate?

How do aspirations work once buddahood is attained? Aspirations are a conditioned phenomena and are to be abandoned at the tenth bhumi (IIRC), and since the dharmakaya is unconditioned, surely it can't be conditioned via conditioned practitioners conditionally triggering the abandoned and purified ...

Re: What are the Vipashyana objects of meditation in Mahayana Buddhism?

I'm sure there probably exists a list somewhere but hopefully the following is useful for now : The object is dependent on purpose but it's essentially investigating the nature of the aggregates, Ayatana, elements, dependent origination and how we conceptualize entities with intrinsic nature where n...

Re: Five Basic Nyam

The last paragraph could be misleading for those unaware of things like the 9 phases of shamatha. They may all be equal in escence but the latter are a lot more 'workable' for most people. In short, vippassana is considerably more difficult when the mind is turbulent and turbid/ when there is no sha...

How has your relationship with Refuge evolved over time?

I'm interested to here others' experience about how their relationship and sense of refuge has evolved over time. How does your understanding of refuge now compare to when you first embarked on the path? Which teachings, insights or experiences have deepened refuge for you? This applies for all Maha...

Re: How to Generate Merit?

So, after some thinking and contemplating, I decided to get cracking at increasing my merit. Now, my life is good and easy so I am looking to increase the merit so I get to do retreats and meet realized Lamas. I don't need merit to attract women or money, so you can skip that. What would yo...

Re: Mind-streams: Separate?

There was a thread on Dzogchen view and 'shakti'ism' somewhere and this question was looked at in more depth by Malcolm and others towards it's end. It would be good to see it looked at in terms of common Mahayana view of the basis and whether or not it is appropriate to call it transpersonal. Afaik...

Re: ‘Dharmas do not arise’

Existence is one extreme. Non existence is another. This is why the middle way is not nihilism. If there were just emptiness, that would be nihlism. But form is also emptiness. If it were just emptiness, that would be nihlism but there is also dependent origination..If it were just emptiness, that w...

Re: Everybody speaks about samaya, but nobody knows what it is.

I will PM you. Once again, I don't think these discussions are at all appropriate in a public setting. The internet's a big place and this is a topic that practitioners should dedicate some serious time researching high and low, far and wide before coming to any conclusions about appropriate and ina...

Re: Is there a karmic problem between me and the teacher ?

Just be patient and in the mean time make pure aspirations with bodhichitta to be able to meet with the dharma and to always have meaningful encounters with all seniors and spiritual friends who are qualified to teach this dharma. There are many teachers who would flat out refuse to see a capable st...

I happened to notice this teaching and thought it appropriate to link in this thread: http://www.lotsawahouse.org/tibetan-masters/khenpo-yonten-gonpo/lions-roar-samaya It's very easy to misunderstand. I actually think it would be better to have a samaya 101 thread, lock it and then disallow further...

Re: Teacher & Root Guru

It really depends on the masters' realization, the students (and the number of them) and any other relevant circumstances. Not all masters have the same capacity . Maybe some masters know when 1000s have took it there and then, maybe some don't. Maybe they find out at a later time if the master look...
