Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Again, if people could sue gun manufacturers the way Big Tobacco was sued, my guess is we either wouldn't be having this conversation, or we'd be having a much milder version of it. Agree. Up until now, manufacturers have gotten a pass on any sort of liability, and other corporations have basically...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

It is also another Mason-Dixon line thing. States that fought for the Union have, overall, far better gun control laws, and are also generally more prosperous. States that fought for the Confederacy have an interest in promulgating a revisionist history of the Civil War, and while the NRA was origi...

Re: Response to Bernie

The real gem here, for me, is in the lengthy discussion in the comments. I found both sides to be very thoughtfully presented, and without ad hominem attacks. I have no personal connection to the Rigpa/Sogyal Rinpoche situation, but the arguments contained some very worthwhile considerations about ...

Thanks DGA for the suggestion. They have informed me he is not a teacher but still in-training.
That's excellent. I hope he's able to continue his training and lead all beings to liberation.

I wonder what would have happened in the U$ if slavery abolitionists had the same attitude as you?
I wonder if the holocaust would of ever happened had Hitler not taken away all guns?

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

I think it is worth noting that the 2nd amendment describes a right to bear arms, but it does not specify which kinds of weapons one has the right to bear. Currently, local and federal laws prohibit private ownership of specific kinds of weapons and hardly anyone objects. Example: the balisong, or "...

Re: Spanish books by "Maestro Myoren"

Does anyone know this "Maestro Myoren"? He has a lot of interesting books on Tendai Buddhism, and other things like bushido and Shugendō, on Sale in Amazon. All the books are in español. I do not know him personally. I did read the biography on his Amazon author page. I think I understand what he i...

Re: Tiantai Meditation

This single seamless meditation is called 'Endon Shikan' which means 'Perfect Sudden Shamatha/Vipashyana' (see Rory's post above for a description). The Endon Shikan can be described as the pinnacle of Tendai meditation. I have found the idea of Endon Shikan to be not too dissimilar to the idea of ...

Re: Many Practices in Tendai, but for Whom?

Curious: what does Tendai Mikkyo practice consist of and how does it compare to Shingon Mikkyo? The comparison to Shingon is not so easy to describe in an online forum, and because I'm ignorant of Shingon, I shouldn't even try to comment on it. I will say that the rationale for practice differs, be...

DGA: There are some practices that laypeople engage in, and not only paying their membership fees. What are these? What do the Tendai laypeople you know practice? Re: Many Practices in Tendai, but for Whom?

It is true, Tendai Shu (like Shingon Shu) is notoriously difficult to get in to in a meaningful way in Japan for foreigners, and to an extent the Japanese themselves, unless you have family ties to a Tendai lineage. There are many practices that are "closed doors" to lay people, and even many which...

It would be worthwhile (in another thread probably) to probe just what it was that prompted Honen to part ways with Tendai and take his inspiration from Shan-dao. Re: Interesting phenomena occurring during Nembutsu

Rather than spit-balling your capacities and trying to use that to determine which group to practice with, the better advice is probably to pick the group that clicks with you. I think whichever you pick, you're going to have to do some self reflection regarding your thoughts, words, and deeds - so...

Many Practices in Tendai, but for Whom?

Recently, a familiar theme has come up in discussions in other subs at DW that is worth revisiting: the notion that one of Tendai-shu's strengths is the multiplicity of practices that are available for the aspirant to engage in. for example here https://dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=27848&sta...

I had an interesting experience recently. So I've bounced around a bit between different Buddhist traditions (first Theravada, then Zen and Mahayana in general including a reading of the Lotus Sutra that I wasn't ready for yet and almost caused me to leave Buddhism behind (at some point I need to r...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

How long, I wonder, before you can get arrested in the US for not having a gun; clearly abberrant behaviour. There are towns in the US where the head of household is legally required to own and keep a gun in the home, for example, Kennesaw, GA. Understandable in Switzerland, where they are military...
