Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

The more one digs down into Ziporyn's writing, the more incoherent one finds the basic foundation of his thinking to be. Of course he is not a stupid person, in fact, his main fault is likely being too smart. His book Being and Ambiguity is highly entertaining if you have the right sensibility for ...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

Back to the OP for a moment. 1) The Lotus Sutra, the Avatamsaka Sutra, and the Prajnaparamita Sutras share the same worldview: Mahayana Buddhism. They may cover different sub-topics, like different chapters in a very large textbook, but they do not present fundamentally different perspectives. 2) T...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

How am I supposed to understand a 2000 year old text, written in an ancient language, full of Buddhist cosmology I don't understand? Commentaries have been written on these sutra's that get to the heart of the matter in a much easier format to digest... Then read some reliable commentaries. Abhidha...

Re: The Dangers of Diluted Buddhism

It reads nicely but does not name names and provide examples I guess I'm supposed to fill in the blanks with my own projections? Exactly. The author implies that organizations such as Rigpa and Shambhala Int'l (recently in the news due to scandal) are the target. Elsewhere, it's the "mindfulness" s...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

If your translation of the Lotus Sutra is 500 pages long, it will take you 100 days to read it at the pace of 5 pages per day. That's very do-able for a busy person (ask me how I know).

It goes better if you read it out loud.

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

Ok, I'm confused about the different worldviews in the three sutra's of lotus, diamond (i.e. wisdom) and flower garland sutra's? My understanding is that: So the lotus sutra teaches the Buddha is eternal No, the Lotus Sutra teaches that Shakyamuni Buddha has a really, really, really long (but finit...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

Offer skepticism, reap the wrath! And condescension. I understand people have their beliefs. Those beliefs may even be founded on evidence one finds personally satisfactory. There is no incontrovertible evidence that settles the issue, though. As such, faith will be part of the equation for most pe...

Or a person clinging to the views that they have come to adopt as a result of their karma and environment, just as they did 500 or 2000 years ago, with the only exception that these differ in flavor. This describes pretty much everyone who’s ever lived, with the only exception being a Buddha, I sup...

The nature of that connection is a mystery to many in the English-speaking world. Is it only the English speaking world? Probably not. The English-speaking world is the one I know well, and I didn't want to claim more than I know. Mostly I'm frustrated with books like this: https://www.goodreads.co...

Re: How is enlightenment achieved in madhamaka and tiantai?

Separate topic, perhaps: what is in TienTai that is not in Nagarjuna? The third truth stands out. A broader range of practices and somewhat broader range of texts being relied upon. Zhi Yi held up the lotus and avatamsaka sutras as the perfected teachings, Nagarjuna more or less explained away the ...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

By the way, did we ever resolve what the word "awareness" means for the purpose of this discussion? Is it the same as consciousness, or different? Is it the same as mind, or different? I still think that Q is dealing with the contradiction in terms his definition of awareness entails: an awareness ...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

Maybe karma as seen in other religious systems sounds like romantic justice but according to Buddhism karma is not justice. In practice, it means that a tormented mental continuum goes through eternal suffering because of its own obsurations, and there can be no justice as there is no one committin...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

There is no empathy in the glassy stare of a snake because he is in a woeful realm, that of a lower animal. It is not his only existence though according to Buddhism. He is only seeking survival, mating, and his next meal. Karma implies a balance and justice and justice is a human-made term; but wh...
