Re: Lecture by Ryoei Tyler, 2013

Do you actually know anything about the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem? I certainly don't, which is why I think that transition went far over my head. Also, are you sure he is adapting Ziporyn specifically? I have only read Evil And/Or/As the Good and small sections of Being and Ambiguity . The connection be...

Re: Lecture by Ryoei Tyler, 2013

Sadly I haven't the intelligence nor the vocab to understand Ziporyn. I haven't read this article yet, but from the sounds of it, I may not understand it either. Ah well. :toilet: I know you to be a sincere and committed practitioner, with plenty of intelligence. Please remember that this lecture w...

Re: Lecture by Ryoei Tyler, 2013

The transition from environmental sentiment to the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, by way of an adaptation of B Ziporyn's local/global coherence/incoherence dialectic, is noteworthy. :good: I have to read more Ziporyn. And more "real" Tiāntāi. The two just sort of flow seamlessly into one another for me, whi...

Re: Lecture by Ryoei Tyler, 2013

What do you notice in it? Environmentalism? What were you thinking would be noticed? I'll second the thank you for putting it up all the same though, it is a nice blurb. The transition from environmental sentiment to the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, by way of an adaptation of B Ziporyn's local/glo...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

I'm no Chinese translator, but i'm not even sure how they get that translation from 法界對法界起法界 If I were to take a stab at it: the Dharma realm facing the Dharma realm awakens to the Dharma realm. Agree, it's selective quotation + poetic license = nonsense. But what really annoys me is that he doesn'...

Lecture by Ryoei Tyler, 2013

I scanned a hard copy of a lecture given by Ryoei Tyler at a symposium I attended in 2013. You can find it here.

What do you notice in it?

Difficulty in discussing Mahayana across traditions

Backstory: One of the issues I noticed with the long, long, long vegetarian discussions we've had at DW has to do with what counts as authoritative across Mahayana traditions. When practitioners discuss various topics with each other, certain assumptions about What Matters and What Is Of Value are m...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

I understood the point you were trying to make. But it is not a deep point. Realizing the emptiness of one thing is the realization of the emptiness of all things. As for your second point, what Buddhanature? Is it something that truly exists? Or is it a conventional truth, a way of talking about s...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

The more one digs down into Ziporyn's writing, the more incoherent one finds the basic foundation of his thinking to be. Of course he is not a stupid person, in fact, his main fault is likely being too smart. His book Being and Ambiguity is highly entertaining if you have the right sensibility for ...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

Back to the OP for a moment. 1) The Lotus Sutra, the Avatamsaka Sutra, and the Prajnaparamita Sutras share the same worldview: Mahayana Buddhism. They may cover different sub-topics, like different chapters in a very large textbook, but they do not present fundamentally different perspectives. 2) T...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

How am I supposed to understand a 2000 year old text, written in an ancient language, full of Buddhist cosmology I don't understand? Commentaries have been written on these sutra's that get to the heart of the matter in a much easier format to digest... Then read some reliable commentaries. Abhidha...

Re: The Dangers of Diluted Buddhism

It reads nicely but does not name names and provide examples I guess I'm supposed to fill in the blanks with my own projections? Exactly. The author implies that organizations such as Rigpa and Shambhala Int'l (recently in the news due to scandal) are the target. Elsewhere, it's the "mindfulness" s...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

If your translation of the Lotus Sutra is 500 pages long, it will take you 100 days to read it at the pace of 5 pages per day. That's very do-able for a busy person (ask me how I know).

It goes better if you read it out loud.

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

Ok, I'm confused about the different worldviews in the three sutra's of lotus, diamond (i.e. wisdom) and flower garland sutra's? My understanding is that: So the lotus sutra teaches the Buddha is eternal No, the Lotus Sutra teaches that Shakyamuni Buddha has a really, really, really long (but finit...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

Offer skepticism, reap the wrath! And condescension. I understand people have their beliefs. Those beliefs may even be founded on evidence one finds personally satisfactory. There is no incontrovertible evidence that settles the issue, though. As such, faith will be part of the equation for most pe...
