Re: Shingon?

Shinzen young who was a shingon monk for 4 years described his practice as self generation What does he mean by the term "self-generation"? Does his meaning coincide with what is meant by the term as translated by Tibetan Buddhists? I dont think te uses the term (havent seen the video in a while) b...

Yes, you need a teacher.

It's common: someone comes to DW with some ideas about Dharma practice, a lot of questions, maybe some aspirations. And someone with a little experience says Hey that's great but you need a teacher if you want to pursue this path. It happens a lot. Here are a few examples. https://dharmawheel.net/vi...

Re: Tibetan Buddhism only loosely connected with Buddha's teachings?

I saw on a Yahoo Answers page someone mentioning that Tibetan Buddhism has been dubbed "lamaism" because it is only loosely connected with Buddha's teachings. Is this true? No, this is nonsense. I've attended my local Tibetan Buddhist centre a few times and definitely intend to continue going. I pa...

Re: Preparing for Ordination in Shingon

First, can you please explain what you mean by "monastic" with regard to Shingon? Actually I should have been clearer. I was going to say monastic as well as non-monastic forms of ordination in Shingon because I am uncertain whether Shingon also includes non-monastic forms of ordination where some ...

You'll have better luck asking about Shingon in the Shingon sub-forum.

Re: Diets are dumb

For the record, I did not advance a theory when I started this topic. I wanted to provoke a discussion by leading with my opinion, which remains my opinion: diets are dumb. A healthy relationship to food isn't dumb at all. Food, in and of itself, is excellent stuff and I'm glad I have plenty of it....

Re: Preparing for Ordination in Shingon

I am making this thread more on behalf of my friends rather than myself. The questions is how to best prepare as a lay Buddhist in one’s practice prior to ordaining in the Shingon school of Buddhism? It is about collecting all types of ideas on how to best prepare as a lay Buddhist before making th...

Re: Preparing for Ordination in Shingon

The Fresno Temple in California offers training! I must contct Rev. Eijun Bill Eidson on beidson@shingon.org . If you want, Tendai also offers ordination, and Rev. Ryuei Tyler may help you, she also has skype meetings for people interested in practicing Tendai Buddhism! https://www.tendai-usa.org/ ...

Re: Diets are dumb

Since the original poster didn't write down any arguments and it's very easy to disrupt the theory that diets are stupid, I think most people misjudge diet as starving. Do you have any arguments in support of your claim that most people misjudge diets as starving? For the record, I did not advance ...

Re: Gohonzon Offerings

As far as prayers for offerings, that may be one area where schools differ considerably; and within as well. In my experience in SGI and NSA offerings are preceeded and followed by not much more than a gassho and possibly daimoku. I should think suitably dedicating the merit wouldn't be out of plac...

walk in my shoes... then, tell me that. I'm headed up to Takoma Park for Ka Shin Zendo, in the morning. They have the same meeting days as the days I have off. Plus they have people who know people who know people i know. Re: Hello! I am back

Its a bit challenging because it seems black and white without the grey area which addresses the question on how lay people can optimise their Buddhist practice as lay people before taking up robes. Well there are so many threads to look through but I guess there is not harm in starting a thread wh...

Re: and because they are synonymous with Mind, they are sentient beings

Interesting discussion. So it's not that the rock has a separate mindstream, according to the Ven Dōgen quote, it's that the rock is in your head. Not seperate after all Dogen does not discuss things in that way. Look at his comment on the story quoted in Sangai-yuishi (SBGZ BDK ed, vol 3, p 66-67):...

Find a trustworthy teacher.

Listen with care to that teacher's instruction.

Follow the guidance you are given to the very best of your ability.

Go on like this.

Keep going...
