Re: Interesting phenomena occurring during Nembutsu

Rather than spit-balling your capacities and trying to use that to determine which group to practice with, the better advice is probably to pick the group that clicks with you. I think whichever you pick, you're going to have to do some self reflection regarding your thoughts, words, and deeds - so...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Something I have always wondered about .. regarding the connection being drawn between mental health and gun violence .. can sub-optimal mental health cause people to kill others? Assuming that percentage of those suffering from mental health problems are same throughout the world on the whole .. t...

Many Practices in Tendai, but for Whom?

Recently, a familiar theme has come up in discussions in other subs at DW that is worth revisiting: the notion that one of Tendai-shu's strengths is the multiplicity of practices that are available for the aspirant to engage in. for example here https://dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=27848&sta...

Re: Interesting phenomena occurring during Nembutsu

I had an interesting experience recently. So I've bounced around a bit between different Buddhist traditions (first Theravada, then Zen and Mahayana in general including a reading of the Lotus Sutra that I wasn't ready for yet and almost caused me to leave Buddhism behind (at some point I need to r...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

How long, I wonder, before you can get arrested in the US for not having a gun; clearly abberrant behaviour. There are towns in the US where the head of household is legally required to own and keep a gun in the home, for example, Kennesaw, GA. Understandable in Switzerland, where they are military...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

People in the UK try to equate the US gun problem with UK knife crime. If you train for many years you may be able to avoid death against a trained knife attacker, if you are also trained and have a knife to hand. I wonder how that compares with two guys armed with assault rifles.......could Trump'...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Yeah, generally speaking the crooks only kill each other. Exactly. Although they may be poor shots, hence innocent bystanders in drive by's. ^^^This. The truth is that it's difficult to shoot accurately with a sidearm (pistol or revolver), especially when you are in self-defense mode (adrenaline is...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Disclosure: I was encouraged to get a gun for self protection when I was living in a really high crime area in South Central LA. I have some crazy stories, but I learned that if you aren't involving yourself with gangs and drugs, you really don't have anything to fear. As it turned out, I never had...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

America is weird. You think being forced to pee in a cup by an employer while they watch is ok but if someone wants to interfere with your ability to shoot paper targets on your day off to prevent school children from being mass murdered they are infringing on your rights. A US tech company asked i...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

There is little need for them to carry them openly either. However, frankly I would rather that people carry their pistols concealed. I really don't want to see their penis extensions. I meant that they should not be carrying pistols at all. I wonder how people packing pistols would react if they s...

This post is for the Americans among us: A tool I find useful for reminding my Congress-critters and Governor what my priorities are is resistbot. You can find it here: https://resist.bot/ it's easy to use, it does what it says it does, and as of today you can use it to find out what your US Senato...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Like taken out of a dystopian novel... I assure you this is quite normal for places in the US like Miami. But not everywhere is like that. I'm just surprised that there's any kind of place in the US where they can enforce something as insane as this. It just feels like a human rights violation to m...

Re: what do we mean by faith?

You seem to be using the word "faith" to indicate what I'd call make-believe: the act of actively believing in something in order to satisfy some imperative. I was wondering how you might respond to this use of the word, as a gloss for sraddha: Śraddha, as I mentioned already is a mental factor. It...

Re: what do we mean by faith?

Suppose you were to ordain as a monk and travel the world as a dharma teacher. Let us further suppose that every person you taught anything to killed their families and then committed suicide, all on the very day you passed on your teaching. Finally, let us suppose that you taught a hundred people ...

Re: "One Mind" in Hua Yen thought

Upon further reflection, though, it is clear to me he was right. Many Buddhist types who reject "God" really just reject that which is easily rejected: the crudely anthropomorphized tribal deity. But they continue to hold tightly to a less-defined spiritual "oneness" or "source" of reality, and to ...

Re: "One Mind" in Hua Yen thought

What do you mean by semi-vedantic? One Mind doesn’t mean a universal mind like in Vedanta. Originally pure mind is pretty common doctrine and so is being undifferentiated which just means the mind is empty of distinctions/conceptualisations. Are you reading it to mean all minds are one undifferenti...

Re: "One Mind" in Hua Yen thought

Returning to the OP, it seems to me that this quotation rory offered from J Stone's book on Japanese Buddhist doctrine... Hua-yen thought sees all phenomena as expressions of an originally pure and undifferentiated one mind ...looks a lot like the semi-Vedantic thinking that some in this thread suc...
