Re: What is convincing to you?

These are posts that are usually well-reasoned and backed by some kind of evidence, such as a textual citation. This is what tends to convince me. There are lots of people who are parroting what they've heard from their teachers, read in some book while providing textual references to support those...

Re: What is convincing to you?

Watching other people suffer is also convincing, with regard to behavioral issues. Especially if those people are close to you. Self-destructive (afflictive) conduct and its consequences are not so easy to witness.

Re: I've been so wrong/pure lands

Nor do I recall reading anywhere that Malcolm has claimed that the Buddha has eradicated all afflictions, as you claim he has. Urns Let's set the record straight then. The Buddha has eradicated all afflictions, it is axiomatic. Only those whose understanding of the Dharma is completely perverse den...

What is convincing to you?

There have been some occasions when I've read a thread or some posts at DW or another forum, and changed my mind about something significant. Similarly, if I haven't changed my mind, I've been forced to consider alternative perspectives that I wouldn't have done otherwise. These are posts that are u...

Re: Impressive SGI Hall in Korea

Not a particular fan of SGI architecture, but they do stuffy East Asian contemporary formal public space about as well as it can be done. My favorite Soka Gakkai architecture will always be the Sho-Hondo that once stood at Taisekiji - demolished after the schism between Soka Gakkai and Nichiren Sho...

Re: I've been so wrong/pure lands

The Lotus Sutra teaches that this IS the Eternal Pure land. The deluded like Malcolm see Samsara as a World of suffering. Like wise they think the Buddha has eradicated afflictions. The Buddha too gets hungry and eats. Likewise the Buddha has an urge to defecate and does. Would you mind elaborating...

Re: What's an emanation?

I'm bringing up this topic again because, as it turns out, this theme is consequential for how some practitioners approach their practice, and how certain practices are understood. To give an example from a DW thread a few years ago, here are portions of some posts that show how one particular inte...

Re: Santa La Muerte

Tenma, Because you have mentioned suicidal thoughts, I strongly advise you to see your guidance counsellor at school ASAP. (I am surprised that no one else on this forum has made this suggestion.) As a retired doctor, this is not something to be taken lightly. I think you may need psychological cou...

A bit off topic, but this is a random thought: image.jpeg There is nothing off topic in Random Thoughts. And what a nice way to bring it back to Dharma. :) I searched DW for the term "Timeless awareness" and didnt come up with any hits. I know what I think it is, but do I really? I think I first he...

Re: Santa La Muerte

Going back to the OP... What are the views of the "new saint," Santa La Muerte? Right now, people are putting up a statue of her in a park nearby and I would like to ask the Buddhist view of the personification of death. Is she worldly or Not? She personifies death, but is based off of an Aztec deat...

Re: How to overcome family estrangement?

You don't have to overcome it. Maybe you don't need to? It's OK to be estranged from your family if: *you do not harbor any ill will toward them. Instead, you wish all your family members only the very best. *you live your life honorably, with integrity. Do your best. *you don't worry about it. Move...

Re: Sweet Home To Alabamians.

It's also worth recalling who actually put Jones over the top. I do hope he remembers this: Doug Jones, Moore’s opponent, was carried to victory by black folks—specifically black women. Exit polls showed that 98 percent of black women voted for Jones, as compared with 93 percent of black men, 35 per...
