Re: Lotus Sutra Dharani

In my experience, Chinese Buddhists are much more likely to repeat Amitabha Buddha's name than a mantra such as om mani padme hum, although it is true that this mantra is somewhat popular within Chinese Buddhism. The list I posted does not follow any particular order. For example, I understand that...

Re: Places to Ordain in the Chinese Tradition

astus gives some good advice above. the holmes welch book is really excellent. and of course city of ten thousand buddhas would be a really excellent choice. you'd get good training there. there are tons of small temples in taiwan that are what your thinking. an example might be 臨濟護國禪寺 in taipei. t...

Re: The Shurangama Dharani

How long did it take people to memorize this dharani? I loved reciting it with the Sangha every morning during my stay at CTTB but since I'm not Chinese the syllables were not so easy for me to replicate. About two years for me... and that's reciting it everyday. Even now sometimes I mess up. I'm a...

Re: Soul split into multiple mosquitoes?

I hope this is a sufficient answer to your question. Answered by Dharma Master Heng Yuan: Daniel, I have not encountered this para before, but it points out the seriousness of sexual desire in humans as well as animals of all forms. It is sexual desire that cause us to be reborn, regardless of human...

Buddhist prayer flags?

Hey everyone, Can anyone tell me why there is a circular disc at the top of these prayer flags? The flags are situated in Bhutan. Unlike Tibetan prayer flags, these ones have some sort of decoration at the top that I've never really seen before. If anyone has any input on this please let me know. Th...

Re: Anybody know what Chua Dieu Quang is?

It's a Vietnamese Temple. I am Vietnamese. Buddhist practice in Vietnam differs from that of other Asian countries, and does not contain the same institutional structures, hierarchy, or sanghas that exist in other traditional Buddhist settings. It has instead grown from a symbiotic relationship wit...

Hi, DaftChris, I think you're on the right track ... definitely Vietnamese  and probably connected to the other two - Sacramento and Santa Ana: http://chuadieuquang.org/ Maybe contact one of them (details on website)? My idle curiosity grew from my visit to Hanoi last year. What I found the...

Re: Amitabha buddha - a personal experience

This story isn't about Amitabha Buddha per se, but it is something that shocked the family, especially my mother and I. About a few months ago my grandmother took korean ginseng to try and boost her immune system. She has a fairly weak stomach and her health in general is very poor. Taking korean gi...

Re: Halo During Amitabha Retreat

Um... I think it's an image of the Virgin Mary on a window. What else should I infer about it? If I don't know the exact cause or event of it, I don't think I should disregard it immediately and say its fake. Who knows, could be a plethora of reasons as to why an image like that appeared.

Re: Halo During Amitabha Retreat

I don't agree. ... Just because something appears 'miraculous' doesn't always imply that spirits are playing tricks on human beings. that's why i use the word "could be" no? /\ Chill. I'm just saying the way you worded the sentence almost made it seem like you were infe...

Re: Halo During Amitabha Retreat

Traditionally, these signs are viewed as auspicious by Buddhists. This happens so many times at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas that if people begin to get really excited by seeing rainbow clouds, or halo around the sun, the monastics would tell the lay people to stop looking and focus on practice ...

Re: Buddha statues.

With the spirit/ghost dwelling in a statue or image to receive offerings, personally I prefer not to offer them the chance to do that. I do not want to encourage them to commit the act of taking what is not given. I would prefer them to use the statue or image in the proper way, that is, as a remin...

Re: Buddha statues.

It is best to obtain a statue or image of a Buddha or Bodhisattva at a Buddhist temple, in person. Great if you could ask a monk or nun to empower/bless the statue or image so that it won't be as easily occupied by some spirit/ghost/other lifeform being. For a statue or image of a Buddha or Bodhisa...

Re: Evicting an Asura

Not sure if this is relevant anymore, but your best bet is to recite the Great Compassion Mantra very sincerely. You will need to recite it 108 times daily before an image of the Thousand Hands, Thousand Eyes Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Within the Dharani Sutra it says, "我若向修羅, 惡心自調伏 (If I encounter ...
