Re: Going independent?

Actually something similar had happened to me but it was a Pure Land temple. I felt like most people there weren't serious practitioner and the tension within the temple was too much for me to handle. I ultimately decided to leave it for my own good.

Re: about karma: What does a snail have to do to reincarnate

I think being born as a snail itself is the result of negative karma and living as a snail or suffer as one help slowly diminish the negative karma.

Re: Can meditating be dangerous?

I know meditation can be bad if the meditator get attached to an arising phenomenon or experience while meditating and get tangled up in it. However I know alot of Vietnamese Buddhism also warn against meditation because even the monks and nuns don't do it either since most are Pure Land Buddhist. I...

Re: Plants can Think & Remember via bbc

Thank you very much for sharing! I always believed that plants have a form of consciousness different from us. To me, this ability to think and responds to stimuli and environment is a form of consciousness. There had been other studies that indicate a form of plants intelligence.

Elf exists.....I am a living elf. Seriously......

But I do admire their belief though. It is quite similar with a lot of earlier belief that spirits inhabit nature. Same thing with Shinto.

I don't quite understand the whole intention of this topic and the topic starter. I am also not as well versed on Indian economic status either. However usually if there is a huge project such as sending a spaceship somewhere, it usually means increase in jobs availability and generating money which...

Nichiren and Shingon on Shinto Kami

I actually don't know where or not I wanted to post in Shingon or Nichiren forum for this. I know there is a lot of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism when Buddhism was first introduced to Japan. I also know because of this syncretism Nyorai are sometimes view as Kami and Kami are viewd as emana...

Re: matter, dharmas, Buddhism

I have an idea of what winds are, but I am not sure about the exact tantric definition. Maybe another person will answer. I don't think physics is ready to say what the most finite component of matter is. Personally I see a problem with saying the most finite part is energy because energy relies on...

Re: Pray for my Mother and help sought

What a terrible thing. I pray that the great heavenly beings will send your mom their power and protection. May they guard her day and night. I pray that Buddhas and Bodhisattva through their miraculous power will subdue any evil spirit bothering your mother and restore peace, harmony, and joy to he...

At least that is the tantric point of view, other Buddhist may have other views.
Is winds another term for energy? At the most basic level of all matter is energy according to physics.

Does enlightenment really brings bliss?

My background is not in Buddhism and some the shallow knowledge that I know, enlightenment means the cessation of desires and attachment so I have a few questions. -How is someone's mind after enlightenment? -Is it bliss or joy that enlightenment brings or just silent peace? -Do they still have feel...

Re: Who can practice Shingon?

Seems like Shingon is truly esoteric then, not much offered to those without empowerment or ordination. From what you said about using Mudra during meditation, a lot of Zen practitioner will form a simple mudra while meditating as well so it is quite similar to other exoteric practice. I am grateful...

Re: Who can practice Shingon?

So the practice for laity in Shingon is pretty much similar to other sect? I see in other sect such as Pure Land, beside the focus on Amida Nyorai, all involve reciting mantras. Is there mudras that laity can do or does that need empowerment?

Thank you,

Who can practice Shingon?

Are Shingon esoteric practice only available to those who ordained under a Shingon master and received the empowerment? How would lay practitioner go about cultivating under Shingon if he or she is not ordained nor received any empowerment?

Re: Sculpting Buddha

As a former Classicist (i.e. a student of Greco-Roman culture and languages), I have a certain fondness for the Gandharan style. What many people perhaps don't know is that without Gandharan Buddhism, scholarship indicates the Mahayana would likely not have survived and thrived. I did not know that...
