How do you deal with 'feelings'?

Recently, I have been pondering this question because one of my friends told me it: Where does anger come from? He advised me to meditate on that but I still cannot find an answer (do you know where it comes from?). I know (but probably dont realize) that feelings are impermanent; you can be happy o...

Re: Can nienfo be a type of (beneficial) meditation as well?

I have learned that people have different ways of reciting. I like to use the wooden fish (木魚) because the strike is associated with the syllables. If not, then I use a mala and concentrate on the syllable: saying A-MI-TA-BHA... 口念弥陀 心散乱, 喉咙喊破也徒然. I cant read Chinese, would you please translate :smi...

Can nienfo be a type of (beneficial) meditation as well?

I don't remember where I was reading this but it described nienfo as being an esoteric practice because it was once something practiced by the esoteric schools of Buddhism. However, can it be considered meditation as well? I mean, you are focusing on something afterall (The Buddha name). When I reci...

Re: Proof of 6 Realms

Twiz, I will give you my honest answer. That is...I don't know. In fact, who knows? Someone in here did mention astral projection, which is something I experience from time to time. However, these phenomena are not the point of practice. I cant speak about it because ultimately, it is something to e...

Re: What did Master Hsuan Hua mean about putting an end to l

I was reading some teachings from Ven. Master Hsuan Hua and read that he said: We must first let go of our desires and put and end to love. I might be paraphrasing. But...does anyone know what it meant? Certainly, it doesnt mean hate and not love ? Have to get back to the Chinese for this one. In m...

Re: putting an end to love

By 'love' he means deep romantic or sexual attachment. I understand...sort of. I remember reading pne teaching where he said that we're born out of sexual desire. While I think that extreme sexual desire can be a hindrance, but if it wasnt for our parents engaging in intercourse, we wouldnt be here...

Re: Why did you choose Buddhism?

I came again to Buddhism after deciding that I no longer wished to be a slave to the impulses of my own anger; because some person insulted me. Closely examining the Four Noble Truths, I found out that this clinging anger and trying to get back at those who hurt me IS a form of desire and thus an at...

Re: Free Book Services

There is also The Corporate Body of the Buddha Foundation that is based in Taiwan. They ship books all over the world but it takes them a while to do so. There is also the Amitabha Buddhist Society. There are various of these in the USA and elsewhere in the world. Try to look for one in your country...

Re: Karma and Reincarnation

This present lifetime is all you have right now. Practice the Dharma with sincerity in your daily life and the rest will take care of itself. I agree! Instead of worrying about a future lifetime, focus on THIS life and practice the Dharma. Agreed, with onr tweak: the present moment is all you have ...

Re: Finding a spiritual path (sorry, long post! Question at

Live one day at a time, one step at a time. Take a deep breath once in a while to remind yourself of the present moment. You can learn and acquire lots of knowledge but none of that will mean a thing unless you have gratitude, sincerity, and kindness. Every moment of your path is a process of transf...

Does one need to accept the concepts of reincarnation karma and the wheel of samsara to follow the teaching of the Buddha? I don't feel comfortable believing In said things... Question on Pureland Buddhism and Japanese pureland sects

I recently began reading about Jodo Shinshu and wonder why in the world it took me this long to come across the teachings of Shinran. I am aware of the historical origins of Jodo Shu and Jodo Shinshu that shape the schools to what they are today and in there beliefs. However, I just have a question....

Why does chanting Amituofo calm the mind?

I am not quite the person to sit down and meditate. So I chose reciting mantra or buddha names instead. Last night, I was sooooo angry at someone whom I held dear that has wronged me. I felt the burning of hatred and anger. Trust me, it was not a good feeling. A friend recommended that I recite Amit...

Too much prostrations?

Lately, I have begun prostrations. The thing is, since I have not done them so often before, my body aches >_< Is this normal?

Is there such thing as too much prostrating?

PS: please excuse me for asking this silly question. I did not know on what other thread to ask it on.

Re: interfaith dialogue

Contrariwise, if we think we are getting deeper into the Dharma and find other religions more stupid, repulsive etc. we are doing something wrong. This was my first step. When I began practicing Dharma, I said to myself "How can I develop a mind of compassion and humility, and want to realize ...
