Agree? No? :

They are two different ways of seeing the same world. One is in accordance with the truth, the other is not.

Of course. You mention that you are involved in buddhism somewhere and a person shows interest and asks you about it. Then youanswer these questions. That's not converting people.

Re: How do you answer people who try to convert you?

Personally I find more in common with Christians than with materialists and nihilist. Depends very much on which type of Christian. The current pope? Yes, definitely? The local Jehova's Witnesses with their threat of eternal damnation? Nope, certainly not, in that case I prefer a humanist agnostic.

Re: How do you answer people who try to convert you?

As Buddhists, I think it's really important to understand that many people are motivated by genuine compassion and love when they seek to convert others to their faith. Their motivation is really no different than a vajrayana buddhist making visible "liberation on seeing" images. It's rea...

Re: How do you answer people who try to convert you?

There are so many stresses and pains, people have to undergo. I am not willing to force that further.. The truth sometimes is stressful. But the stress of the truth is the only stress that is actually positive. If you tell an alcoholic he is an alcoholic, then you might stress him, but you might al...

Re: How do you answer people who try to convert you?

That is a possible view on that incident. But I hurt them.. No. They hurt themselves. They assumed they have the superior argument and then found out that this is not the case. Their hybris got cut back to a realistic outlook. That they didn't like it is entirely their problem and I find it rather ...

Re: How do you answer people who try to convert you?

Since I once lead a discussion with two bapstists, I now refrain from any covincing discussion with christians. That day they started this discussion with much joy and faith. They felt superior and blessed. After half an hour of discussion I had turned the tables with a line of argument. Then they ...

Re: Anti-Tibetan Buddhism Signs

No, it is not. Here "path" means "method." Neither the method of Vajrayāna practice (the two stages) nor the method of Dzogchen use the method of renunciation as the path (taking restrictive vows, eschewing objects of desire and so on). . Renunciation means, you have realized th...

Re: Anti-Tibetan Buddhism Signs

If you don't renounce, it's not buddhism. Even in Dzogchen you have to renounce your samsaric views, attachment, aversion, ignorance etc. You can not keep your delusions, while being enlightened, no matter which set of teachings you follow. Dzogchen is not a path of renunciation, not by any stretch...

Maybe when confronted with zealot Christians who ask what your belief is, tell them you are a satanist. Then they are so shocked that they leave you in peace.

Re: How do you answer people who try to convert you?

What do you do in a work environment where your coworkers are hostile or disparaging of your beliefs? Why would you make religion an important topic at your workplace? Is your boss a christian zealot? And what would they do if they had a native Indian hindu or sikh or Chinese buddhist co-worker? I ...

Re: Adderall, ADHD...

With notable exceptions, most ethnically tibetan lamas are not good at personal advice.. Yeah. A really good, empathic psychotherapist or counsellor is better for personal relationship, job etc problems. Though a lama is the right person to ask about dharma practice with a mental illness/condition.

If you use forceful methods and do it regularly you can cause mental illness.

Re: Doubts about Pure land

I can't. I come from a Tibetan buddhism background (where prayers and practices to be reborn in a pure land are also common, but not the main practice for most practitioners) And in the tantric literature you find teachings about pure lands / the transcendent buddhas and bodhisattvas. It's also esse...

Re: Doubts about Pure land

There are prayers in Tibetan buddhism to be reborn in the pure lands. There is even a whole cycle of practices to transfer one's consciousness (or that of someone else) to a pure land during the process of death. If pure lands exist and it's possible to be reborn there, then why not aspire for it, ...

Re: Purchasing things made by slave labor

Consuming less is really the only way to mitigate complicity in economic hegemony. Yep. I buy most of my clothes second hand, I buy only as much electronic equipment as absolutely necessary and only replace what is broken (my computer is 6 years old and I traded it for some work from a friend when ...

Wondering ... if one doesn't purchase products of slave laborers, won't these people ... just die ? Not if you buy products that are produced under fair conditions instead. Plus, multinational corporations are in many cases the reason that these people don't have another source of income in the fir...

This type of slavery goes hand in hand with human overpopulation, a generally unfair global economy and armed conflicts.
