Re: Aphantasia & Dzogchen / tantric practices

Just to further explore your analogy: If we were both standing in the ocean, we’d both be wet, but our individual instances of that wetness would differ depending on size, clothing worn, etc. If we focused only on the quality of wetness itself of course it would be no different. However if we focus...

Re: Some doubts regarding rebirth

What is meant by mind here, and how does it interact matter? Not trying to argue a different point, I am just trying to understand better. A mind is a series of moments of clarity and knowing. That’s it. It doesn’t need to be anything more. It interacts with matter through the five physical sense o...

Re: Some doubts regarding rebirth

If some assert mind is an emergent property of matter, this is the annihilationist view for the simple fact that when that material basis ceases, that mind is annihilated. Likewise a permanent consciousness is utterly divorced from a material basis, since matter is obviously impermanent, and this i...

Re: Some doubts regarding rebirth

But thats still not true. The reality of the mechanism of the computer is always present; correctness of execution is always within the operating constraints of the system. Memory can be corrupted, marginal timing can dip outside operating areas and fault the system and so on, memory fails, disks f...

Re: Some doubts regarding rebirth

As far as the simulation is concerned, there is no outside world apart from the inputs it is given, which can be given in any manner and at any speed. This computer need not respond to real life events, we are just concerned with simulating consciousness, so we can give inputs at only the rate it ca...

Re: Some doubts regarding rebirth

Thank you for the update regarding Penrose, I was more interested in this particular thought experiment than his apparent solution to the problem. I won't speculate on quantum mechanics though since I don't know anything about it and neither does anyone else concerning it's relationship with conscio...

Re: Some doubts regarding rebirth

The operation speed makes no difference whatsoever to a simulation. For example, if we are in a simulation ourselves, we would have no idea about what pace it is running at on the so called external hardware, the concept is meaningless to us. It is why it can take really large amounts of time to sim...

Re: Some doubts regarding rebirth

There is an interesting thought experiment in one of Roger Penrose's books regarding consciousness as a computational process. If you consider consciousness computational i.e. it can be simulated by computers, then it just a very complex algorithm that can also be simulated by hand, say in a noteboo...

Re: How to strengthen belief in rebirth

Narwhal90's quote did lead me to google about what the Buddha said about rebirth in the Pali Canon for sentient beings, and this article by Thanissaro Bhikku has a whole bunch of quotes: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/thanissaro/truth_of_rebirth.html He(TN, not the Buddha) also follows ...

Re: How to strengthen belief in rebirth

Hopefully without starting off the usual stuff on rebirth, I gotta ask why you feel you HAVE TO believe in rebirth. It's the one question that gets answered for us all in the end. None of the folks here, no matter how many times they have believed in rebirth in their previous lives, has managed to ...

Re: Dzogchen Lungs this July 2022 (Precious Reading Transmissions From Khen Namdrol Rinpoche)

Didn't everyone who attended the recent Dzogchen retreat by Jigme Wangdrak Rinpoche receive that? Or was the empowerment in that retreat something different? Can anyone who attended please confirm?

Re: Dzogchen Lungs this July 2022 (Precious Reading Transmissions From Khen Namdrol Rinpoche)

Perhaps this is a bit off-topic, but what is the difference between a Guru Yoga like say the one in the Longchen Nyingtik ngondro or Rigdzin Dupa and Tigle Gyachen if one has already received pointing out instructions and/or rig pa'i rtsal dbang? What happens as you go more inner/secret?

Here is a thread from 2017 regarding this topic, although it doesn't explicitly consider zoom/livestream: https://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=25691 I think you are already probably familiar with Kilung Rinpoche since you mentioned his sangha earlier, Anam Thubten I believe is anothe...

Can we get a bump on this? I'm assuming "subduing" planetary influences entails wrathful deities? Vajrapāṇi, generally speaking, is the best for controlling planetary spirits. Thanks!! :anjali: for those of us with difficult charts this is really helpful information. Just asking, please n...

Re: Do I need a teacher?

I think it is completely different now. In many cases the pandemic etc. are mentioned, I think all of it has been remade. The last part just came out if I'm not mistaken. Oh I know, I am currently going through a refresher of Awakening Wisdom before the online retreat next week, and I intend to tak...

Re: Do I need a teacher?

Subscribing to Tergar's Vajrayana Online offering gives you access to instructors via interviews. I am not sure how often you can schedule these, but I do know you have the option. I took the Joy Of Living courses online 4-5 years ago when the format was different, and for the most part, I totally m...
