Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

And how exactly is the thread related to the Eight Fold Path so far? You've been doing a bit of soapboxing and making demand of others in this thread, how about now you explain what point it is YOU are trying to make. Initially I asked about SMP in the context of the Dharma. My point: What constitu...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

NO sect or yana supercedes the Noble 8 fold path according to Lord Buddha's first intention!!!! Stefos :anjali: P.S. I have received Direct, Symbolic and Oral transmission into the state of Dzogchen and have received Pointing out instructions on the Ganges Mahamudra into the state of Mahamudra and ...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

@Stefos - I think what needs to be spelled out, is that in respect of sexuality, marriage and gender, traditionalist/conservative views and modern/liberal views are, nowadays, incommensurable . The second point is, this is an Internet forum, and the internet audience generally favours a modern/libe...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

Stefos, This is the forum for you: https://dhammawheel.com/ Please note that this forum, that of Dharma Wheel, is a forum for Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. So it's expected that one discusses things here from the point of view of Mahayana and/or Vajrayana, depending on sub-forum or topic etc. He...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

And now, my friend, perhaps you understand why I've always said "modern Buddhism" and I've raised such a "fuss" about what I perceive is happening in Buddhadharma today... So you believe that the only proper Buddhist approach is your approach. You want some sort of centralised dogmatism and not int...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

See now you are heading into tricky territory. For example: If a woman agrees to have sex with you for payment because they need the money to pay the rent and cannot get it any other way are they actually consenting? Or, given the high incidence of previous/childhood abuse of current sex workers do...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

"There is One Eternal Buddha and [your name here] is his Prophet" doesn't work, and it's a shame to see it filter in to Dharma discussion. This is actually standard Nichiren Buddhism and Lotus Buddhism generally which, though exclusivist in its claim on truth, (one must accept the Lotus Sutra, or i...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

And the same boundaries to discussion apply in the case of vegetarianism being mandatory for Buddhists. This is a position adopted by certain Sutras accepted by Chinese Buddhists but by few others. Chinese and Indo-Tibetan Buddhists can co exist..but not when either group claim that theirs is the e...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

Here's a bit that I imagine almost any Buddhist would agree on: https://accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an04/an04.055.than.html Thank you Johnny for posting. THIS hyperlink helps me. Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

And how do we Fair Folk know that the Pali redactors OR Tibetan redactors didn't compose sutras Malcolm? I'm not Malcolm, but I would like to propose an answer to your questions. First: scholars use evidence and reason to make their claims. The consensus of scholars is that there have been a number...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

When the Chinese were dismayed that they could not find any mention of such things as filial piety and so on, they composed sūtras to reinforce those values. And how do we Fair Folk know that the Pali redactors OR Tibetan redactors didn't compose sutras Malcolm? What about the other 17-23 ancient s...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

I didn't mention a particular stance, other than that the Buddha (obviously) had little to say about modern sexual politics or ideas. I don't really feel like pulling anything up from access to insight because I'm on a mobile device. Obviously though, if you are looking for Pali sources it is a mos...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

No thanks, there are enough moralizers who want to deny others their autonomy in Dharma already. We don't have to like others sexual choices, but having 'urgency' about another person's (consensual ) sex life, and offering unsolicited advice is just asinine behavior, period. I think that there need...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

No, the Buddha had at least two wives, and according to some sources, three; as well as many mistresses. The Lalitavistara reports he had a wife named Gopa, who was his head wife: Then indeed, in order to conform to worldly conventions, the Bodhisattva dwelt among 84,000 women and showed himself to...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

The point of this exercise of course is to dispel the notion that the Buddha advocated the "traditional family" based on Western monogamous values. Okay then, Mahanatma, how should we then live? However you like, as long as it does not harm others. Define "harm others" according to the Sutras pleas...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

Modern 'family values' did not exist in the Buddha's time, because people did not conceive of the nuclear family the way we do, fairly obviously. Neither did the silly 'sex postivity' one currently finds on the other end of the spectrum. One can understand that, of course, "modern family values" wh...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

My guess is the Buddha would of advocated against moving from parter to the other and promiscuous sex. He would of recommended family values for his lay followers. My understanding is the same however I can't give solid reference points in either the Pali, Chinese or Tibetan works. I don't see why ...

Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

Hi everyone, I have a multi-faceted question to ask re. sex & the Dharma: Is sexually moving from one "partner" (bizarre word meaning nothing to me) to another ethical per the Dharma? I understand about consenting adults, MY being aware of the act, the consequences, etc. Is this not being promiscuou...

Thank you gentlemen for sharing I'm done perpetuating my story here. I need to much more clearly perceive what's going on in the various transmissions I've received. Re: About Alara Kalama

The Buddha taught different things to different people in accordance with their capacities, as Buddhas do, and they were compiled centuries later into different collections of texts. This isn’t just doctrine, it’s common sense. Different lineages inherited different bits and pieces in accordance wi...
