Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Everyone does ganapuja on the 10th and 25th days, right? I thought ChNN said we should do it on Full Moon, Guru Rinpoche Day, New Moon, and Dakini Day. Generally, if one is alone one does the full medium thun with protectors instead of ganapuja. :jawdrop: Can you please explain why? Because there i...

Re: receiving transmission

im going to settle back down now and just read what i already have that is not restricted and then go to the pundarika retreats, in terms of sms i think that might have to wait as weekly travels to london is fairly far for me right now. Cool, that you're going to Tsoknyi Rinpoche's retreat teaching...

Re: The DJKR Topic

...In other words, the results of genuine “crazy wisdom” are always positive and visible. When a teacher uses an extreme approach that is rooted in compassion, the result is spiritual growth, not trauma. Trauma is a sure sign that the “crazy wisdom” behavior was missing the wisdom to see what would...

Re: The DJKR Topic

He specifically says it trumps samaya: Physical, sexual, and psychological abuse are not teaching tools. No disagreement there however it is possible that what would outwardly be seen as abuse may not reflect the inner experience of the student (and of course teacher) or the effects of it. Like Do ...

Re: The DJKR Topic

You can keep harping on about how seeing every little action your guru takes as "pure" is part of "guruyoga", just remember not everyone was taught to do that. ChNN for example, always says something to the effect of not doing it while thinking of him in his ordinary form where he needs to sleep, g...

Re: Books on the hara

Sorry, just saw your question. As you probably know the kikai tanden if mapped is often placed a few finger widths, or 2-3 inches, below the navel, and within the center of the body. But that kind of description doesn't have any real bearing in my experience. The function and utility of what is mea...

Re: The DJKR Topic

SMCJ, do you think pure view excludes paying attention to cause and effect? I'm exclusively a lower-yana practitioner. As such in all my practice I only deal with cause and effect. Full stop. However my teacher once told me that you could summarize the Vajrayana commitments as "never criticize anyt...

Re: The DJKR Topic

You are not answering my question, I don't need more DJKR quotes: The part that you haven't explained is why you think this means people should avoid discussion of relative conduct. I haven't seen you attempt to explain that once in this whole conversation, that I can recall. Do you think pure perc...

Omori Sogen's Sanzen Nyumon , published in English as Introduction to Zen Training , has some basic info with a few drawings. My upcoming book (see my sig) has some foundation practices appropriate for beginners in regards to fukushiki kokyu (i.e. diaphragmatic breathing) and tanden soku (the so-ca...

Re: Successful empowerment and conferral of samaya?

If that's the criterion I can't imagine empowerments are "truly received" very often. Why do you think that? Well, for starters, I don't think I've ever had "total confidence" in anything so I guess I find it hard to imagine that many people at empowerments have such confidence. It's also not clear...

Re: Successful empowerment and conferral of samaya?

In note 203 of The Treasury of Precious Qualities, volume 2, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche says: "The criterion that determines whether or not the empowerment is truly received is the presence or absence of total confidence that the master giving the empowerment is one with the deity of the mandala. Even...

Re: Successful empowerment and conferral of samaya?

A complex subject cannot be summed up in a quick quote. You should read the section called "the Ripening Empowerments" first, esp. ppgs. 17-27. Well that just shattered any notion I ever had of receiving empowerment. On the basis of that text I probably haven't even consciously received a pubic hai...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

I would advise talking to your teacher. Doubt is a pernicious blighter and can chip away at the "gains" of even the most dedicated practitioner. Oh I know. But it's actually not so much that I have doubt whether I received empowerments but more like I think Malcolm is wrong or unclear, which is why...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

Pretty much. If you did not understand 100 percent, you did not receive the whole thing. What about if you understood it but an hour later...or 5 day later...or a month? But still practiced it in the mean time ? I think intention and level of sincerity must play a part in the cases where it may hav...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

If you do not have samaya, you did not receive the empowerment, you are not qualified to practice Vajrayāna, and so whatever effort you make in practicing Secret Mantra will become poison rather than medicine. So how does one know whether there is samaya and reception of empowerment? And why does i...

Re: Lama Norlha

A person does not have to be an Arhat in order for them to be able to teach Dharma. If being an Arhat was a prerequisite for teaching we wouldn't have many teachers around, would we now? ;) True, but I have little respect for teachers who can't walk the talk. Maybe my expectations are too high, but...
