Re: Successful empowerment and conferral of samaya?

If that's the criterion I can't imagine empowerments are "truly received" very often. Why do you think that? Well, for starters, I don't think I've ever had "total confidence" in anything so I guess I find it hard to imagine that many people at empowerments have such confidence. It's also not clear...

Re: Successful empowerment and conferral of samaya?

In note 203 of The Treasury of Precious Qualities, volume 2, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche says: "The criterion that determines whether or not the empowerment is truly received is the presence or absence of total confidence that the master giving the empowerment is one with the deity of the mandala. Even...

Re: Successful empowerment and conferral of samaya?

A complex subject cannot be summed up in a quick quote. You should read the section called "the Ripening Empowerments" first, esp. ppgs. 17-27. Well that just shattered any notion I ever had of receiving empowerment. On the basis of that text I probably haven't even consciously received a pubic hai...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

I would advise talking to your teacher. Doubt is a pernicious blighter and can chip away at the "gains" of even the most dedicated practitioner. Oh I know. But it's actually not so much that I have doubt whether I received empowerments but more like I think Malcolm is wrong or unclear, which is why...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

Pretty much. If you did not understand 100 percent, you did not receive the whole thing. What about if you understood it but an hour later...or 5 day later...or a month? But still practiced it in the mean time ? I think intention and level of sincerity must play a part in the cases where it may hav...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

If you do not have samaya, you did not receive the empowerment, you are not qualified to practice Vajrayāna, and so whatever effort you make in practicing Secret Mantra will become poison rather than medicine. So how does one know whether there is samaya and reception of empowerment? And why does i...

Re: Lama Norlha

A person does not have to be an Arhat in order for them to be able to teach Dharma. If being an Arhat was a prerequisite for teaching we wouldn't have many teachers around, would we now? ;) True, but I have little respect for teachers who can't walk the talk. Maybe my expectations are too high, but...

Re: Very sad news

No one can put obstacles in front of new Buddhists (are there any in truth?), including a bad teacher. If we make a connection with a bad teacher, that is on us. That is our karma. We learn from that experience and move on. We all have lived many lifetimes, and have done many worse things in our pa...

I think Malcolm was referring to the first part, that Lung Tha is not KY.

Re: Very sad news

When did this happen? I think he is referring to an incident described in "Blazing Splendor" but, having just read through it, it seems that CR was questioning whether TUR had the lineage for the empowerments he was offering to DR at that time. Anyway, not to belabor the point, here we are not disc...

Re: 'Zero-Calorie' Sweeteners Aren't Actually Calorie-Free?

Splenda contains sucralose and Equal contains aspartame and acesulfame K. It's not all about calories. If you really can't do without sugar try Stevia or Erythritol. I've heard that stevia is too bitter tasting. Is Erythritol sold in stores? I only bought it once so far (almost a year ago and I hav...

Re: Very sad news

IDK... There's a story how Chatral Rinpoche met Tulku Urgyen and thought him to be fake until Dudjom Rinpoche intervened. When did this happen? I think he is referring to an incident described in "Blazing Splendor" but, having just read through it, it seems that CR was questioning whether T...

Re: Very sad news

Well, I remember when I first read this statement I took note because it is the only such statement about SR that I have seen. As far as whether one person can recognize realization in another I think probably some can, especially in a situation where you have a guru like NK evaluating the progress...

Re: Very sad news

If he had realization then he would have acted differently. I am not trying to defend the notion that SR has realization but it is interesting to note the following passage from http://all-otr.org/public-talks/1-following-the-dzogchen-path : ... Sogyal Rinpoche’s level of practice is extremely high...

Re: Very sad news

One thing to bear in mind is that Sogyal has had a huge hand in introducing thousands of western students to luminaries like Dilgo Khyentse and so on, whom they otherwise may have never met or would have had great difficulty receiving teachings from. Yeah, I myself am among those. But while I'm gra...

Re: Growing in the religion and identifying redflags

@Pero Ive read a few other general books like the Dhammapada and a few historical ones. What I was looking for is a good book of practices/instruction that I can use in between the classes I take at my local Dzogchen Center which only meets once a month Ah.. The thing is in order to really practice...
