Re: Dzogchen Historiography

Well come to think of it, I asked my grandfather about these things I wouldn't overgeneralize what dadaji had to say. The contraction caused by British and Islamic colonialism was severe in the realm of public religious life, as you can tell by architectural evidence like the dearth of new temples ...

Re: The concept of a root guru

Well one indication described is when practicing something someone taught you causes you to wake up you see that person as a buddha. Milarepa never stopped thanking Marpa. I don't think that was just a method. He had various lamas, but one got him into dharmakaya, which is a way of approaching life ...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

Maybe, but Rishi pose with eyes locked into ajñā chakra is done by the Kriya yoga, astamga yoga types. I seriously doubt they picked that up from a Dzogchen tantra. Yeah, I agree with you here. There are definitely some techniques that were floating around and were picked up by different schools be...

Re: Patrul Rin. and Drikung?

For those wondering about the connection between drikung and patrul Rinpoche. The complicated close relationship goes like this: Jigme lingpa's previous life was a lineage holder of Drikung and He was the root guru of 1st Chungtsang Rinpoche. The latter reborn as Jigme lingpa's illegitimate son and...

Re: Patrul Rin. and Drikung?

…he decided to go to Lhasa and he exchanged some odd sign language to the monastery (where the texts were kept), like turning over a box, and they recognized one another as Drikungpas And I always thought the secret Drikung handshake was to spend ten years in a cave on some really demanding practic...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

These methods of introduction predate Dzogchen upadesha texts. These postures and gazes were around, āsana, bhānda. These don't come out of books. We are generally discussing things in terms of historical evidence here. It is easy to claim that everything in Hinduism was always there, from the begi...

Re: Patrul Rin. and Drikung?

I didn't know that... but I am aware a one or two generations ago there were only one or two guys holding onto the lineage. It almost fell apart. Didn't know that. What happened? I believe it was Patrul Rinpoche hooked up with the guys in Lhasa and managed to keep the transmissions and practice lin...

Re: Patrul Rin. and Drikung?

Hey y’all. I was revisiting some videos of Drupon Rinchen Dorje Rinpoche’s teachings, and therein he said something to the affect of “Patrul Rinpoche is responsible for the upholding of the drikung lineage today.” Can anyone speak to Rinpoche’s involvement with Drikung Kagyu? I didn't know that... ...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

There were actually traces of proto thogal elements in early sems phyog texts (since semde classification isn't used in earlier times) . Scholars have identified certain Thogal postures or techniques used, are similar to the Shaivists' version found in the kashmir area which is also reported to be ...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

Oh, C',mon, man....cast your net wider! Is it probelmatic for Vajrayana practitioners to entertain the idea that their practicees lack historical grounding and do not stem from Gautama Buddha? This has been done before. In so many flavors. Well, Vajrayana is from Indian and have a historical ground...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

If I am not mistaken - and Mutsuk can correct me here - JLA draws some parallels between the practices in that text and Dzogchen to bolster the argument for an Indic - as opposed to Chinese (i.e. Chan) origin for Dzogchen. I think that was in L'essence perlée su secret , though I am open to correct...

Re: Dzogchen Historiography

There are certain points in Dzogchen mythology that, in my view, lack historical validity. The narrative of Guru Garab Dorje's life shares parallels with the myth of Jesus, particularly the Gnostic version. In Indian traditions, no master is associated with a miraculous birth. Additionally, Dzogche...

Re: Vajrayana practice without empowerment

Probably a more interesting question would be is there buddhahood in one life outside of the machinations of Vajrayana? Some of the texts called tantras or pith instructions seem to be saying there is. I can even think of one very wonderful two stage method that does not have an empowerment. And it'...

Re: The concept of a root guru

I have been researching the concept of a root guru and whether it even makes sense. An example is the subjectivity in defining the root guru, as a quote from the fixed topic of this forum section: According to the traditions of Sakya, Gelug and Jonang, a root guru is anyone from whom one has receiv...

Re: Vajrayana practice without empowerment

Some members of a practice group have received a particular inner tantra practice. Others have not received the empowerment but have been present and participated when the lama led the practice (which was OK with the lama.) Now, some members of the group think it would be all right for those withou...

Re: Ten Bhumis in Mahavastu

In Mahavastu, which is an early sutra considered to be proto-mahayana and which belongs to the Lokottaravada school of Indian Buddhism, the funeral pyre for the rupakaya of Shakyamuni Buddha cannot be ignited before Mahakashyapa has arrived to the place. Once he has come he asks the elder Katyayana...
