Re: Cold Showers

I haven’t tested it myself, but it’s scientifically proven, I’ve heard, that putting your face in cold water slows the heart rate. Try an experiment. Get a pan of ice water, put your hand in for 5 minutes. See what happens to your heart rate. I tried this with a hand and no change. And yes, I’ve go...

Re: Cold Showers

Actually, in Sowa Rigpa, cold water is great for the head and face. Have heard the same in Zen circles I know, where splashing cold water on the head and face is a remedy for certain conditions. RE the subject in general, may be interesting also to remind about takigyo (waterfall training) in Japan...

Re: Cold Showers

Wim Hof claims it’s natural and healthy to subject ourselves to temperature variations, as we did through the vast majority of human evolution, because it kind of exercises the arteries when they expand and contract. I also generally follow this mindset. I always rinse off with cold water at the en...

Re: First Democratic Party Debate (June 26-27)

To my chagrin, I am now official an Elizabeth Warren fan. I think she came up strongest in tonight's debate. The other candidates looked wishy washy and she had the passion and clarity needed to put up a good fight against Trump. I like being surprised. She made an impression on me too, and of all ...

Yeah, the understanding you express is not surprising after having read Alan Watts.

Like Sentient Light, I also recommend The Rinzai Zen Way by Meido Moore.

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

So it was a rhetorical question and Grigoris was struggling to say that he can't explain the ch-ch-ch-ch-changes? Eight Worldly Dharmas. I'll remember that the next time I claim something is false but can't explain why it's false. It's ch-ch-ch-ch-changes, turn and face the Eight Worldly Dharmas......

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

The question is: do you understand your statements (plural). I made the statements, so obviously I understand them. How do you explain Christianity going from being considered progressive and revolutionary to conservative... How did communism go from being a force for revolutionary change and freed...

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

Anyway, this whole progressive vs conservative thing is a complete fabrication. Christianity was once considered progressive and revolutionary, now it is a force of conservatism. You're saying that's how Christianity was/is considered, but it's a fabrication? Quite an enduring falsehood. Force of c...

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

Most of these definitions and musings are not relevant to today's political climate at all. Exactly JD. Kirk and other cultural conservatives were not and are not 'political', neither in motivation nor practice. As the first page says: Conservatives distrust “abstractions”— that is, absolute politi...

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

You could, of course, try to argue that TNH is reforming Buddhism, but I don't think you'll be able to convince anyone. We could also argue that each one of us, every day, reforms Buddhism. It's true, too, since every time we choose one text over another, one interpretation of the precepts over ano...

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

It would if the rule were something like: all conservatives are religious and all liberals are atheists. That would be a stupid rule. The evidence shows that conservatives tend to be religious, or at least identify as religious, at around double the rate as liberals. Source? Pew Research Center. I'...

We could list exceptions all day long, and probably much better ones than those listed so far. Exceptions disprove your fake rule. It would if the rule were something like: all conservatives are religious and all liberals are atheists. That would be a stupid rule. The evidence shows that conservati...

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

Spiritual traditions are traditional , not progressive. The Church of Satan would care to disagree. Spiritual traditions can be progressive. Ever heard of Engaged Buddhism, for example? Secularists can be incredibly conservative. Richard Dawkins / Jordan Peterson are both "secularists" in various w...

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

Secular culture is highly invested in the notion that everyone is equal. Secular culture is highly invested in separating religion and state, particularly religious authority and state. If for no other reason, because unverifiable ’higher truths’ may be abused. An unverifiable higher truth could be...

Re: "I didn't ask to be born."

Silly question but if a soul didn't exist prior to conception then why should it exist after death? We're talking about faith here. If people have faith that God created a soul, what would stop them from believing the soul would survive the death of the body? In the realm of beliefs, anything goes....

Lads & Lassies,

It is only 100 pages, read it for increased clarity.
Given that these principles are so incongruent with the current "conservative" White House administration, they fail to increase clarity.
