Re: Dharma government?

what's happening in the encounter of Buddhism and the West, is that Westerners bring a lot of our anti-religious samskara to bear both for and against Buddhism. No one needs to be anti-religious to see the potential folly of fusing church and state. It’s bad enough that Americans are so spiritually...

Re: Dharma government?

enlightenment values are not accurately characterized as utilitarian or pragmatic. Also, many traditional or religious values, in practice, are frighteningly utilitarian or pragmatic. For example, isn't Trump supposed to represent traditional or conservative values? I think this reaction is quite c...

Re: Dharma government?

Science deals with the measurable; whereas Buddhism, right from the outset, understands and incorporates 'the immeasurable' (actually four in number.) Equanimity, love, compassion, and joy are highly subjective but that doesn't mean they're immeasurable and therefore beyond scientific investigation...

Re: Dharma government?

Modern scientific method implicitly supposes a separation between knower and object of knowledge. That is why objectivity is the criterion of truth for scientific observation. I believe objectivity is the criterion of truth in science because science seeks factual knowledge, or observations not inf...

There's a good one called: Insight Timer. Lots of sounds and controls, but I don't think it has a feature for turning off all notifications.

Re: Dharma government?

the goal of Nirvāṇa is outside any of the categories of the understanding of so-called secular philosophy in the West. I think if that is understood, then secular cultures can still accommodate such teachings but again only if they understand that it's about something out of range of scientific und...

To be brutally honest, I think many on the Left in the Anglophone West have become so intolerant that they scream 'Nazi' the moment anyone mentions a remotely conservative idea.
Don't you know our history, dude? Democrats are Nazis.

mental habit of discourse lies on mental habit of grasping to mental formation, mental habit of grasping on mental formations lies in mental habit of the division of a self and an other, but mental habit of division of a self and an other is a subtle mental formation not an intrinsic quality. how s...

Re: boring questions about losing weight

I gradually lost 15 lbs over the last year without really dieting by loosely counting calories and not going over 2000 a day, and burning 300-500 on most days. As mechashivas mentions, strength training or building mussel can be good for weight loss because mussel consumes calories just by being in ...

Re: Why is Oral Sex Considered Sexual Misconduct?

I think it has more to do with hygiene. Tulku Urgyen was once heard to remark "Why would anyone want to put their mouth there?" Combine that with the prevailing hygiene standards around the time these rules were written and you start to get an idea of why it might not have been (or is, in many case...

Re: Karma, "soulmates" etc

So, I'm curious what anyone's take, including the actual Buddhist official outlook is on "soul mates", chance encounters, predestined relationships and all that. My understanding is that our karma determines just about everything, so when we meet people it's due to our karma? But what exactly does ...

Re: Non Buddhist enlightenment

From what I've read in the "What is Enlighhtenment?" section of that blog it does not go beyond "clever words." With a large amount of nonsense. While perhaps well-intentioned, there is often a great irony to be seen in these cases of people creating their own systems by cherry-picking from traditi...
