Re: Tibetan mountain protector

This could be from a verse in Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośa (VIII, 39): "The teaching of the Buddha has two aspects: The elements of scripture and realization. These are maintained only through teaching And through practice." སྟོན་བའི་དམ་ཆོས་རྣམ་གཉིས་ཏེ། །ལུང་དང་རྟོགས་པའི་བདག་ཉིད་དོ། །དེ་འཛིན་བྱེད་པ་ས...

Yeah, except I wasn't able to find it. The closest was Lama Gursam, but no info. on which way the Garland was facing (just clockwise, that's all it said).
Well, there's your answer. If the garland rotates clockwise, the letters must face outside, otherwise the mantra would go backwards.

Re: Recommend an English Translation of Kamalashila's (c. 9th century CE) Bhāvanākrama

The ninth chapter of Bodhicaryavatara is on vipashyana Finding Rest in the Nature of the Mind by Longchenpa The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment by Tsongkhapa (vipashyana is in Vol 3) Moonbeams of Mahamudra A translation and commentary on Kamalashila's text can be found in t...

Re: Unicode mantras

So does anyone know of a collection of basic mantras already entered in one of these systems that I could download and multiply with copy/paste to make the strips? I'm not looking for anything too unusual: the mani (actually I have that), Guru Rinpoche, Tara, Amitabha, probably Dorje Sempa? Most of...

Re: Jewel Garland - Which Mahakala?

Hah yes, :) I think enlightened being can appreciate a good compromise. ;) The one posted by Grigoris seem to be the right one based on the source and lineage. In terms of iconography, yes, but not lineage -- the one in Drikung is said to come specifically from Cakrasaṃvara Tantra. This is the tsak...

Re: Jewel Garland - Which Mahakala?

The Mahākāla in the Jewel Garland is the two-armed form holding a curved knife and skull-cup. Texts in the collection don't give a specific name to his form -- he's just called "Mahākāla" and is said to come from the Cakrasaṃvara. As with other Sarma deities in the collection, the lineage originally...

Re: Treatment of Dharma books and materials while travelling

If you put this mantra from the Manjushri Root Tantra between the pages of your Dharma book, there will be no fault when the book is stepped over, etc.

Re: Jayarava's New Thesis on Heart Sutra: Sanskrit Version Deliberate Forgery by Tang Chinese

This may lend credence to Malcolm's suggestion that the Heart Sutra could be a Vajrayana period text. While it is possible that the Heart Sutra along with these tantras you mention are of Chinese origin, the burden of proof would be on those seeking to prove such a claim. This is very interesting, ...

Re: Jayarava's New Thesis on Heart Sutra: Sanskrit Version Deliberate Forgery by Tang Chinese

I'm not a Sanskritist, and these are not Prajñāpāramitā texts, but I'd like to point out that sarvatriyadhvagatāḥ jināḥ or similar is quite common in the Gaṇḍavyūha, including a few instances in the Bhadracarī. It seems to me that it's not the case that only atītānāgatapratyutpannāḥ buddhāḥ is idiom...

Re: Difficulty doing Manjushri practices and prayers due to negative association

Well, just to play Devil's advocate, are you sure that he could not have had a change of heart and issued emanations to Jamdudvipa out of pity? Emanation, sure (the last sentence of his quote actually indicates the possibility of magical emanations). But reincarnation, well, he says no. To me it lo...

Hello, I am wondering if unethical and harmful behavior I have engaged in during dreams will have similar karmic imprints to doing it in waking life at some point. any info around this would be helpful. Thank you. This question was addressed in the Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā: Śāriputra : If someo...
