Re: Prayer for Aurelia

I also personally request that anyone reading say a prayer for her. She deserves it just as much as any of us, and just as much as every other suffering being in the world.

Prayer for Aurelia

The Netherlands RTL news published an article on yesterday about a 29 year-old woman who was approved for euthanasia for psychiatric reasons. Her euthanasia death by lethal injection is scheduled for January 26. The article states (google translated): Sarah has no terminal illness, but knows that s...

Beauteous Mathematics

The buddhadharma puts little emphasis on math and geometry. Since it takes an unusual type of mind, that is to be expected. An Aussie who changed his name to Jain 108 has a sacred mathematics mission. Here are some of his videos: https://jain108.com/video-centre/ His books & e-books are far too expe...

Re: A 1st look: Red Pine’s Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra as Jasmine Tea

Never did finish Red Pine's version, so am now revisiting it. He says it was in classical Sanskrit, not the usual hybrid variety. Is that unique among sutras or just uncommon? It is thought that there was no Zen in India, but perhaps the esoteric Zen approach (like dzogchen) was just better hidden b...

Re: Inspiring Thoughts

It happens that many of us are able to believe political evils are simply structural, as if human nature itself were no obstacle.

Re: Abhidharmasamuccaya

A book version from Asian Humanities Press with the translation by Sara Boin-Webb of the same Walpola Rahula's French translation is also available.

This one and the Gelongma's are so similar (in notes too) that one must have used the other a lot.

Re: Faith

Among the mental factors here is Asanga's definition: 8. What is faith (śraddhā)? It is complete and firm conviction (abhisampratyaya) with respect to what exists (astitva), serene joy (prasāda) relative to good qualities (guṇavatna) and the aspiration (abhilāṣa) for capability (śakyatva). Its funct...

Re: Faith

The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism has much to say about sraddha, here is how the main entry begins: śraddhā. (P. saddhā; T. dad pa; C. xin; J. shin; K. sin 信). In Sanskrit, “faith” or “confidence,” a term that encompasses also the sense of “belief.” Faith has a wide range of meanings in Buddhism,...

Re: Faith

Precious Lamp Dharani continues: It clarifies your faculties and makes them sharper. The power of faith cannot be overcome. It is the basis of eliminating the reactive emotions. Faith seeks out your natural abilities. Those who have faith are not attached to the pleasures of contact. It wards off u...

Sports and enjoyment? That was from the Chinese version, but the notes like 119 were not in the pdf. Horner's translation from the Pali does not seem to have such a passage. But maybe I missed it in a word search of that version. It could be referring to any sort of entertainment like gambl...

Faith means belief without doubt, faith in the existence of the Buddha, of the Buddha’s Dharma and of the bhiksu sangha; faith in the existence of arhats, of the present world, of the next world and of filial piety towards parents; faith in good remuneration for good action, bad remuneration for ba...
