Depends on what country you live in... 45 hrs of tattooing cost me the equivalent of about 200USD.
The ones you have are worth every penny ;)

Re: Question on the Amitabha mantra

Just a question on the Amitabha mantra. The most common one is Om Amideva Hrih. However I also read it by Tulku Thondup Rinpoche as Om Amitabha Hrih. Is anyone familiar with the latter? The former is a Tibetsn corruption of the latter, however it is so diffuse now as to have become canonical. That'...

Re: Do we have any old-testament scholars on here?

I appreciate the responses you have all given. Especially the piece from Aquinas. I also just found this from The Book of Numbers 12: And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision, I speak with him in a dream. 7 Not so with my servant M...

Re: Hot vs. Cold Hells

Some of the responses on this thread are very insightful. I'll add that in the lam rim we read about the ways that karma ripens. In addition to environment, rebirth, habit, etc, there is one that is called 'result similar to the cause'. If we look at texts that describe the hells and what sins lead ...

Thats right, things like neglecting one's parents, adultery, etc lead to cold hells. Also theft, prostitution, nude modeling, etc.

Do we have any old-testament scholars on here?

I have one question:
why does the deity sometimes communicate through dreams (Genesis 40-41, Daniel), while at other times we find a back and forth exchange(moses, noah, etc)?
Thank you

The story is about the historical buddha not the Mahayana buddha.

Re: Burn Buddha Burn

I have a suspicion that part of the secrecy around some teachings is that they need to be a surprise when they're taught to have the desired effects. 10 pounds of flax, or a slap across the face, as you remark, doesn't have the same effect if you know that's the script. I have heard that from a shi...

Re: Vajra Hell

AFAIK Vajra hell is a special feature of Vajrayana - only practitioners who break samaya in ways gruelling enough to go there can end up in the vajra hells, which is below even avici (although I believe there are some who say that it is more like an aspect of the avici hells). Avici and the vajra h...

Re: If the Mahayana Sutras were not spoken by the Buddha what authority do they hold?

In Mahāyāna the tathāgata is not considered to be name and form, therefore the word of the Buddha is not tied to the statements of any specific historical figure. Yes mahayana texts like the diamond sutra say this. We should add that mahayana texts also have plenty of verses saying how great they a...

Re: If the Mahayana Sutras were not spoken by the Buddha what authority do they hold?

So you do not support that idea that the Buddha could give one teaching which was understood on a perfect way by the 3 levels of understanding namely, low, average and high. ? Well, it's not if I support it or not, but the pali canon certainly doesn't support it (because it is a mahayana idea) The ...
