"Mercedes-Benz apologises over ad in China that quotes the Dalai Lama"

http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/mercedes-benz-apologises-over-ad-in-china-that-quotes-the-dalai-lama I don't know how I feel about using the Dalai Lama to sell products (do they give him royalty money??) But even worse is that it seems like there is no one anywhere who doesn't bow down to...

Re: Buddhist Monks on the Las Vegas Strip

So you think there are Buddhist monks/temples engaging in scams? I tried to ask him about their practice and where they are from, but he was quite old and appeared not to speak much English. I'd love to have followed them to where they go and find out their real story. I think they are possibly leg...

Re: Keith Dowman's argument for his "interpretive free" translation style

All five seem reasonable and workable to me. I find English translations of Buddhist texts that translate key terms such as Dharma to be problematic because they seem to introduce Problems. Sure it can easily lead to confusion when there are two texts or two teachers using different words for the s...

Re: Keith Dowman's argument for his "interpretive free" translation style

Following Tang Xuan Zang's five rules would be an excellent start. Would you mind elaborating on this a bit? I'm not familiar with those five rules. He said that there are five instances where a word should be left untranslated (literally 五種不翻) -If the word has multiple meanings (like arhart and bh...

Re: Upāya (continued from another thread)

The practice of collapsing the meaning of texts into their titles is a pan-Indian hermeneutical device. It is not unique to Nichiren, nor even to Buddhism.
Interesting, do any other examples of this come easily to your mind?

Is this similar to the mantra in the heart sutra?

I'm a firm believer in standardized translations.
This is one thing where westerners should look to the Chinese for guidance.

Acer to market 'smart prayer beads'

The smart prayer beads will keep track of a user's mantra recitations, and record the number as merit in an online app...the beads will automatically keep track of how many times a user recites a mantra, by counting the number of times the beads pass through a user’s fingers. https://www.taiwannews...

Re: agitated and upset after meditating out of house

I'm not an expert but I'd make sure to have my back to a wall. Short time meditating.. pay attention to if the agitation arises watch it arise, detach from it and keep the session short. At the end of the session before you stand up rub your hands together then rub your eyes, face and legs. Then if ...
