Re: Circumcision

One medical reason can be in premature births, when the skin isn't totally separated. All boys are born with the foreskin fused to the glans. It doesn't separate fully until years later. Ignorance of this causes parents and doctors to forcibly retract the foreskin, which causes scarring and phimosi...

Re: Circumcision

Here is what I recommend to any circumcised man who wants to understand the function of the foreskin. 1. Keep your glans covered with medical tape for about 2 weeks. You can remove it during showers, sexual activity, and urination, but other than that, keep it covered. You will discover that it beco...

Re: Sutra Commentaries

Some great recordings of teachings from Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, some of which are commentaries on Sutras. . . http://www.siddharthasintent.org/resources/podcasts/ Up near the top, you have Prajnaparamita Sutra, which he gave this year. Scroll down for more, including Lalitavastara Sutra and Avat...

Re: Religious ocd, vow problem, and seeking guidance

I would recommend you go find a teacher to give you some real vows (since you seem to like vows). Just be careful about who the teacher is. I don't think this poster "likes" vows. If the OCD diagnosis is correct, the vows are a compulsion. When you suffer from OCD, compulsions are not fun. I agree ...

Re: Religious ocd, vow problem, and seeking guidance

I think i'm a buddhist. But when i was a kid, i was a highly religious and superstitious kid with ocd. My problem is about 9 or 10 years ago when i was 14 or 15 years old, i made a counter vow against my ocd rituals. In that time, I didn't know that i had ocd , in fact i didn't even know the concep...

Re: Jealousy, but not about status?

"May I one day be able to take joy in the success and happiness of others." This is a good idea. I've tried to apply sympathetic joy to those situations, even in that moment when I wanted to cry, but it always felt fake. Yes, I can relate. Fake practice isn't fun! Sometimes the best we can do is ma...

Re: Jealousy, but not about status?

Is there any dharma teaching for working through jealousy that doesn't have anything to do with just wanting more material things or recognition? Or is it that it's still about that, just not as obvious? The standard Mahayana antidote to jealousy is sympathetic joy - instead of feeling jealous, fee...

Chinese New Year one month before Tibetan this year??

Why is the Chinese New Year celebrated tomorrow, but Tibetan New Year next month? Aren't they usually at the same time?

Looks very good to me. I have also tried it and it tasted really potent and delicious. Maybe even my favorite chyawanprash - and I have tasted quite a few. But I'm not an expert, only an enthusiast.

Re: Namkhai Norbu and Vegetarianism

Mahayana lacks the methods that Vajrayana and Dzogchen have. Why wouldn't a Mahayanist saying the heart sutra mantra over some meat before eating, with the intention of creating a connection for that animal to meet the dharma, have the same effect that a Vajrayana practioner blessing the meat? Also...

Re: Obsessive Thoughts

So I have OCD, specifically what's called 'pure ocd', obsessions without compulsions. I take medications for it, but still suffer a great deal from the anxiety and from the obsessive thoughts. I am curious what some alternative methods of dealing with it are? I recommend EFT ("emotional freedom tec...

If you have the empowerment, you have the lung for the sadhana.
Why do you say this? Is it generally understood that if one has the empowerment, one has the lung for any given practice?

Re: what is the best realm from which to help beings?

Without siddhis of some kind it is virtually impossible for us to help anyone (except in rare cases). I disagree. What about the countless ordinary beings who are able to help through the power of prayer? re. the original question, the best realm from which to help beings is whichever one you're in...
