Re: Thoughts on Dzogchen without buddhism?

it seems that everything conditioned is perpetually justified just as it is. Everything, from the horrors, to the wonders, from the sorrows to the ecstasies, from the coarse to the fine grained, seems to be precisely where they are meant to be. They cannot be any other way. This seems to be to be d...

The title of this topic brought this timeless wisdom to mind:
"When all are one and one is all (Yeah)
To be a rock and not to roll"

And who could argue with that? :sage:

yes, I once heard Igor Kufayev teaching on Kashmiri Shaivism... it resonated for me. Igor went back to Europe where you may still find him.
Thanks Linda,
I'll have to check that out. A close friend of mine was very influenced by Thomas Merton. Evocative poetry.

Re: Is the Mystic Law the same as God? If not, how so?

Lots of intelligent and wonderful people in this forum. I really appreciate learning from all of you. You truly help me in my own practice. :namaste: I would echo what others have written, that if it's the dualistic interpretation of the Abrahamic God, then the answer has to be no. However, there a...

Re: Recently, a family member told me that "without God, we are nothing".

Geshe la said .."People would be surprised to know the truth as to who Jesus Christ really was" Like an avatar of Buddha, or vice-versa? I guess you could see it from that POV if you wanted to, but I don't buy it exactly. Even if Christ had met Buddhist teachings during his 'missing years...

Re: Recently, a family member told me that "without God, we are nothing".

Why would Buddha leave all those with out the merit to meet True Dharma...have nothing to guide them.. Some Christians with a conscience ask questions like; if a primitive tribe have never even heard of Christ is it fair they go to hell? Surely God wouldn't just abandon them... It's a serious issue...

Re: Recently, a family member told me that "without God, we are nothing".

I wondered what my Buddhist friends here might say to that line of thinking. :namaste:  From a Christian POV it's spot on: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was ho...

Re: When you first started... (lightweight question)

When you first got started in the Dharma, what was the one thing you would most have liked to be told at the beginning that would have made your life, or even your progress in the Dharma, easier? Something trivial, like "Eat a good lunch at this centre, because supper is usually very small&quo...

White Tara Mantra Question

I’m used to the mantra being rendered: OṀ TĀRE TUTTĀRE TURE MAMA ĀYUR PUṆYE JÑĀNA PUṢṬIṂ KURU SVĀHĀ Just watched the vid of H.E. Garchen Rinpoche chanting: OṀ TĀRE TUTTĀRE TURE MAMA ĀYUR JÑĀNA PUṆYE PUṢṬIṂ KURU SVĀHĀ So a different sequence for the ĀYUR PUṆYE JÑĀNA PUṢṬIṂ section. Does anyone have a...

Re: Yes, you need a teacher.

To those attempting to walk the Vajrayana path, not having a teacher is problematic to the point of being an impossibility. Which I would say is pretty problematic for them. General Sutra and coming to grips with basic ideas is probably where most visitors would start, in which case advice can be g...

Re: Yes, you need a teacher.

That kind of 'basic kindness' may leave sentient beings wandering in circles. And may not be kind at all. No one made any judgment about the 'character' of others. A nebulous concept at best. Using the skandhas model where would you posit 'character'? It's true that none of us should speculate abou...

Re: Yes, you need a teacher.

It may not be what you want to hear. But if there are no or few karmic obstructions, and if you are highly motivated you will find a teacher. This is standard stuff in the Vajrayana. Uncontroversial. If there are karmic obstructions there are things that can be done about that..but they need input ...

So, stage one is: "Get yourself a teacher."

Then if there isn't one, stage two is: "Tough karma mate, your problem! Still, if you were really motivated, you know..."

I stand corrected.

Re: The "Self" in Tibetan Buddhism

It is a generic term for non-buddhists, specifically those who adhere to eternalist doctrines, such as Samkhya Yoga, Advaita Vedanta, etc. I thought as much. The Jains and Samkhya seem to posit two substances in the universe; a sentient conscious Jiva and insentient matter. Karma is the process by ...

Some interesting points raised on this thread but one so far overlooked. As it's impossible to know the background of anyone who posts questions here, it's also impossible to know their means. Whilst a teacher may be the best solution, there are many physical locations in this world where a suitable...

Re: The "Self" in Tibetan Buddhism

Since the matrix-of-the-one gone-thus is empty of the two selves, it is not similar to the self of the forders [tirthikas], and because uncompounded noumena transcends the momentary, it is permanent, stable, and everlasting. It is not that it, like space, is without any of the qualities, powers, an...
