I've always liked Garma Chang's 'The Buddhist Teaching of Totality'.
https://www.psupress.org/books/titles/0 ... 179-3.html
It's quite old now, dating from the early 1970's, but despite the subtitle (the Philosophy of Hwa Yen Buddhism), it's engaging rather than academic.

Re: Why the Earth Spirit testified for Siddhartha Gautama's insights
There's a mahaya version in the Lalitavistara. The 'earth goddess' is named Sthāvarā here. The Bodhisattva replied: “Evil one, the earth here is my witness.”
He then embraced Māra, the evil one, and his demonic retinue with thoughts of love and compassion. Like a lion, he was without fear, fright, a...

Re: History of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism
I have a copy of this famous 2-volume red book. I acquired it when it was first published as a "subscriber", ie one of the people who paid upfront so that, with enough subscribers, it was possible to actually print it. It describes itself as "First edition 1991". I heard the oth...

Re: Buddha Sakyamuni's Life Story?
I know this is posted in the Mahayana forum, but if you are interested in a Theravada version, Bhikkhu Nanamoli's "Life of the Buddha According to the Pali Canon' is well worth a look. That's an excellent one. Indeed. Along with the Lalitavistara it's my favourite source for the Buddha's life....

Re: CTTBUSA Avatamsaka vs Cleary translation
Thurman received flak for some of his own translations, including from Jan Nattier, so I think he is definitely in favour of being sympathetic to those who undertake the difficult and sometimes thankless task. I don't think that Cleary's study solves the problem that people are addressing. The poin...

Re: CTTBUSA Avatamsaka vs Cleary translation
Maybe it's just me, but I get frustrated when translators render common Buddhist technical terms into English (which is ok in itself) without providing notes or glossary entries, so that I can work out what the original term is. To be fair, it is much easier to provide notes and explanations in a d...

Re: CTTBUSA Avatamsaka vs Cleary translation
Both CTTB and Cleary translations have their virtues and drawbacks. I agree that the 84000 one is now probably the most reliable translation for the 10 Stages and Gandavyuha now. As for the notes, 84000 notes are not going to help the average reader, since it's usually just noting variants in diffe...

Re: CTTBUSA Avatamsaka vs Cleary translation
Can't help you with the source languages, unfortunately. But for the Gaṇḍavyūha, it might be helpful to look at another, very recent translation, freely available on the 84000 website. The translation is by the excellent Peter Alan Roberts and it includes extensive textual notes (something notably ...

Re: Gaṇḍavyuha Sutra coming 10/27/21
That is news indeed! How wonderful. I really like PA Roberts' translations so that's another plus. Not sure about Stem Array as a translation of the title though. Presumably it's more accurate than Flower Garland or whatever, but it doesn't seem to mean anything as a phrase in English. Any thoughts ...

Re: Users' Avatars
I wonder sometimes how much my reaction to a particular user's post is affected by the picture or the name. There is the marvellous opening of Great Expectations, which is relevant here I think: I give Pirrip as my father’s family name, on the authority of his tombstone and my sister,—Mrs. Joe Garge...

William August Purfurst was born at Hanwell, Middlesex, on 2ndJune 1906. As the name indicates, his father was of German origin, and he was an only child. His father died when he was quite small, and he was brought up under the care of his mother, to whom he remained devotedly attached until her de...

Re: Palpitations!
Just watched the Chelsea Liverpool highlights on MOTD. Looks like Liverpool were a bit fortunate to prevail on this occasion. They certainly don't look unbeatable. Chelsea are exciting, but very much a work in progress. City on the other hand looked imperious against Watford. Arsenal are Arsenal and...

Re: Palpitations!
And speaking as a longstanding Chelsea supporter, we are having the most interesting season for years, with all these young academy players coming through. The transfer ban may well turn out to be the best thing that could have happened to the club. However with our current issues with defending it ...

Re: Chögyam Trungpa
At his funeral a close friend (of his and of mine) gave a eulogy which included the line “ l never knew anyone who did so much good or so much harm”. Both aspects are true. I will always be grateful. And always regret what might have been. And never regret seeking teaching elsewhere even though at ...

Re: Death Ceremonies/Rituals in Geluk Lineage?
Glenn Mullins's excellent little book of translations relating to death and dying (I think the current edition is titled Living in the Face of Death) includes a ritual for the dying person based on Yamantaka and his 100 syllable mantra. He says that he witnessed this ritual being performed on severa...
Re: Love
Maitri, translated as loving kindness, covers it for me.
Wishing for others to have happiness and the cause of happiness. Real happiness that is, i.e. dharma.
