Re: Antifa at it again

... The early life of Hitler is well documented. He was raised with extreme, extreme, extreme fear. Told to be afraid of basically everyone, and many things in life. Sharp corners, strangers, -- yes, Jews -- countless things.

Re: Antifa at it again

Classic question. If you could kill Hitler as a baby, should you?

Ah - but the correct answer is much better. Raise him with love, and the whole thing never happens.

Of course time travel is not possible.

Re: Antifa at it again

Further, Ananda, if living beings in the six paths of any mundane world had no thoughts of killing, they would not have to follow a continual succession of births and deaths. Your basic purpose in cultivating samadhi is to transcend the wearisome defilements. But if you do not renounce your thought...

Re: Antifa at it again

Being rude and sarcastic is not at all in accord with Buddha's teaching.

In any case, the point was that violence does not ever solve violence.

Peace and non-violence are able to overcome violence.

Re: Antifa at it again

The only difference between far right Militas and groups like Antifa, are honestly a lack of weapons. I would be very surprised if Antifa members didn't have access to weapons. So why don't they use them? Because they're not the monsters you seem to think they are. When you demonize/attack the peop...

Re: Chess

I play chess on my iPhone, set to a level where I can win, but not always, and not that easily. It's set to ELO 1600 if that means anything. It's a nice little app called ChessPro . Regrettably nobody in my social circle plays chess, otherwise I'd play real people from time to time. "d love to see ...

Re: Chess

I'm not a good player, but I dearly love the game and have played since I was a kid. These days I have no one play, I get in maybe one game per year:( I finally figured it out -- non-rated games!!! . . It took me quite a while to discover that. haha. o I had played all rated games only, which is fi...

Re: Compassion: An End To Violence?

If you want to end violence, start with what you eat. Buddha was not uncertain at all in his saying animals should be treated with loving kindness equally. I.e., non violence applies to animals as well as humans. The Surangama sutra covers this in detail.

Re: Compassion: An End To Violence?

Pretty good answer smcj. Another point is the paradoxical Boddhisattva vow. Limitless beings, but a vow to save them all.

Re: Chess

It's possible to do both. But, being affected like that is understandable. I've found studying a lot will overcome it, and also being aware and meditating very much. Also walking a lot, (1-2 hours each day, or several days a week is great), can be very helpful. The idea is to be unaffected, just lik...

Re: Chess

A0 is the nickname, so to speak, of AlphaZero. It looks funny but it's shorter and easier. A0 changed chess, and it's like flight, or telephones, or something similar in it's advance, in that nothing similar to it has ever been seen. Games and positions of A0 are unique, and so far beyond anything e...

Re: Chess

That's really awesome, Keith. Do you get to take your kid to any tournaments? Those are really great for children. Fun and learning concentration, and spatial logic and all the rest that is chess.

Do you have any favorite games? Over your career.

Re: Chess

At the moment I'm working on 4 by A0, that are less than 60 moves each.

Previously, ones like Smyslov, Botvinnik, Alekhine, Bronstein, and later ones were focuses for my study.

Chessmetrics.com is a nice website.
