Re: Shar Khentrul Rinpoché Jamphel Lodrö

What are you talking about? No body is impugning a legacy. I just want to know if this guy is qualified. I’m not decided. But there is controversy surrounding the man. My question is: does that matter? I know what the KCT says about monks being best gurus, and gurus should be given consorts, even s...

Re: Shar Khentrul Rinpoché Jamphel Lodrö

Reading the OP more carefully definitely raises some red flags. If one wants to know what has really corrupted the Vajrayana in the west - often discussed on this forum - it's this kind of stuff. I don't take kindly to the great legacy of Kongtrol, Khyentse Wangpo etc, being deployed to serve a dec...

Re: Shar Khentrul Rinpoché Jamphel Lodrö

I live near his main centre in Victoria, Australia. At one point I made some inquiries about Jonang guru yoga, and then shortly after my partner went along to a refuge ceremony to suss out the centre/teacher. She had mainly positive things to say, but then she was discussing this with one of her Tib...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

Yes, it is certainly a very subtle metaphysics. But also an epistemology. The sense of 'satya' strays across both domains depending on the context and the particular argument being made. i.e. sometimes it is a statement about (the nature of) reality, sometimes a statement about how one might know or...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

That's funny PeterC! I don't think just reading Nagarjuna is much help to anyone, because you really have to understand who he is critiquing to gain any real insight. i.e. The early Madhyamaka project doesn't make a whole lot of sense without Sarvastivadan realism to deconstruct in the first instan...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

In the same breath what is Mipham's treatise but a peerless example of analysis? If one agrees with his arguments and view of Madhyamaka, then one is assenting to the efficacy of analysis. In any case, when all is said and done, everyone is doing guru-yoga to get there, Gelugs included. Mipham was ...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

Yes, but it's the principal method for realising emptiness (or any object of Buddhadharma for that matter) For you and/or your lineage, perhaps. There are other methods which do not rely on analytical meditation. Not an unimportant point at all. Since we’re talking about Mipham’s views on the subje...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

I've signed in for the first time in 3 or 4 years for this post, so, you know, I might respond on this thread, but then I sign out again..... 1. It's hard to do Tibetan Madhyamaka without sectarianism, but please try. 2. I personally find both Mipham's and Tsong Khapa's interpretation very inspiring...

Re: Buddhist "relics"?

nichirenista, Your views however falls under the umbrella of scientism and materialism, and this forum is as its header says " A Buddhist discussion forum on Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism " (and like its Terms of Service says: " Do not be disruptive. Dharma Wheel is an environment for the discuss...

Re: Buddhist "relics"?

No worries nichirenista - I'm not saying you are. I'm just saying that showing respect for different views is appropriate for all parties in this discussion. :anjali: Thank you. I have no problem with people believing the relics are literally those of the historical Buddha. I just don't believe it....

Re: Buddhist "relics"?

Speaking as a mod here: It's quite legitimate on a Buddhist forum that one person may believe in the power of relics and another may not. It seems clear to me where Nichirenista and Malcolm sit on that issue. If there is something to be gained by substantively engaging in the issue, then by all mea...

Re: Israel, Palestine, Antisemitism

Dan74, being well schooled in psychoanalytic informed social theory, I can only agree entirely. Lamentably, there is so little in political (and other) discourses that manages to escape or subvert the unconscious logic of Us and Them. Buddhists are not immune, nor are Jews, Zionists and Palestinians...

Re: Israel, Palestine, Antisemitism

You're right that these are very influential ideas in the construction of a new age mythology - the two articles come from texts by Alice Bailey, a post-theosophical writer who in fact coined the term 'new age.' Beyond the pernicious character of the racial stereotyping, an excellent account of such...

Re: Israel, Palestine, Antisemitism

In every country and down the ages, the Jew has turned to commerce and has worked with money Because in Europe they were not allowed to own land or work as an artisan. They had the international connection to other jewish communities and were mostly literate, so international trade was a reasonable...
