Re: Harming spirits

Good answer, Magnus. But, if it's Naga sang , then only on Lu-theb days when the Nagas are amenable to offerings. Otherwise, it will actually create problems with the Nagas. If it's Riwo Sangchod or some other general sang-chod, then every day or whenever you want, most typically in the morning, and...

Not sure about your specific questions, but I received the LN Three Roots from H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche. So for sure He did transmit this lineage.

Re: Huldufólk

Yeah, I agree with Loppon-la: Theurang. Lama Dawa keeps a bunch of gnome statues around His property. He refers to them as Theurang. He says there's a particular Theurang (Mi-mig Zangpo) who hangs out there. Every so often Lama Dawa plays bag-chen, a Tibetan gambling game in order to keep the Theura...

Re: Advice need - pondering whether to receive Yamantaka empowerment

It's not sectarian. It's about samaya. And, since the Lama we are talking about died without confessing and purifying his breaches, this samaya can't be repaired. That being said, similar to what Malcolm said, I have taken teachings from His Holiness that did not come through this Lama, and we promi...

Re: Advice need - pondering whether to receive Yamantaka empowerment

The issue of Pabongkhapa for Nyingma is a difficult one. My original Teacher was HHDL's English language translator for 10 years from 1959-69. However, being Nyingmapa, He and His wife never took empowerment from His Holiness. There was a lot of gossip and back-biting about this in Dharamsala at the...

Re: TCM vs Tibetan Medicine

Several summers ago, I spent a couple of weeks at H.H. Kusum Lingpa's Lung Ngon monastery in Golok. There was a small clinic in the monastery. Seeing both Tibetan and Chinese medicines in the dispensary, I asked the Tibetan doctor staffing the clinic about the use of both Chinese and Tibetan medicin...

Ten-drel, dependent arising. If one doesn't understand this, then it's hard to understand much of Vajrayana.

Re: Altar accessories

The tormas offered at Saraswati Bhawan were only for a special fund-raising. This is not something regularly offered. If you want to have clay tormas made specifically for you, try Minling Gyurme. He's an artist Lama from Mindroling who is accomplished in all the Tibetan religious arts, including to...

Sorry, I forgot to answer the second part of your question. Yes, I am the resident Lama for the Boulder Valley Ngakpa Center in Lafayette, CO.

BTW, yesterday, Chimechodra from DW attended our Naga puja. Nice to meet him and hope that he joins us again.

Re: Comissioning Naga offering pujas

Yes, we do Naga puja at least once a month. In fact, we just did it yesterday afternoon. Oct. 19, 21, 23, 24, 27, and 29 are all Lu-theb days this month. We won't do a full Naga puja again this month, but if you need me to, I can do Naga sang and/or Naga amendment on one of these days. You'd need to...

Re: Guru Mantra?

What I've been taught is that we pray to our Teacher in the form of Guru Rinpoche, Vajradhara, etc. to avoid having any criticism or impure view of our Teacher, such as, "How can He be a Buddha? He (or She) doesn't display the 32 major signs. He's fat, He's bald, He has an unsightly mole," etc. Howe...

Re: Bey-yuls or hidden lands? Is this real in Buddhism?

Absolutely authentic within the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. If you'd like to know more about bey-yuls, read One Step from Paradise, the story of Tulzhug Lingpa's attempt to go to a bey-yul on the slopes of Kanchenjungna (Kang Chen Dzod Nga) on the Sikkimese/Nepali border.

Re: What is Bon?

Many people forget (or don't know) that the Rime (nonsectarian) movement in Kham was, at least in part, a Buddhist rapprochement with Bon. It was Khyentse Wangpo Who said that Bon was a valid Dharma leading to Liberation. In terms of Gelug disregard for Bon, one of the ways many Gelug dis Ngagyur Ny...

Re: Appropriate Material for Prostration Board?

Many, many years ago, I did something similar to Yagmort. I bought a 4 x 8' piece of 3/4' plywood and cut it down to 3 x 7.5'. Then I glue a very thin piece of smooth panelling to the top of this. Formica or lanoleum glued on top of plywood would also work. 3/4" plywood was probably overkill. If I w...

Re: Unity of deity and mantra

This is something you can experience directly if you say a Deity's mantra enough times with one-pointed concentration. It is a nyam /meditative experience of non-dualism that leads to insight/wisdom. Once you have this experience, your recitation of mantra will be much more effective. It is a step t...

Re: Question re Nagas

If I remember correctly, Dudjom Lingpa says people dominated by earth and water are more apt to have visions than people whose dominant elements are wind and fire. Maybe Malcolm can explain the mechanics of this (and correct me if I've got the elements wrong). Nagas have great influence over the env...
