Re: Tathagata Earth-Holder King

I also saw this at the FPMT site. However, I'm wondering if this is actually a generic/group name for the Kings of the Four Directions Who are also referred to a Sa-dzin Gyal-po. The Four Kings would be able to grant whatever (worldly) desires one wanted. But are the Fours Kings "Tathagatas?" I assu...

Khyung gShog rTsal

Does anyone know anything about the sung-ma (female Guardian) Khyung gShog rTsal (Gardua-winged Adept/Mighty One)? No mention of Her in Oracles and Demons of Tibet . Came across this name in a serkyem offering I'm translating. She seems to be the consort of Dam-tag/Dam-chen Dorje Duddul. Any informa...

Loppon-la,

Thank you for clarifying the source of this belief. I did not know this. How wonderful!

Re: empowerment for Dudjom Tersar Ngondro

That Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche was Guru Rinpoche's regent in this time is a commonly held belief among Nyingmapa. However, I don't know who first said this. Sorry. It is not my self-made opinion. I can say that I've heard this from the mouths of a number of my Gurus over the last 48 years.

Re: New terma and their continuation outside of a lineage.

It's my understanding that, in Nyingma, when someone has completed all the coursework and passed the exams for the Khenpo "degree" but they are a layman, not a gelong, they are called Loppon or Acharya (like Loppon Orgyen Tenzin and Acharya Lama Dawa Chodrak).

Re: Left Buddhism

Of course there are magical forces when you recite Vajrasattva (or any other authentic mantra)! Mantrayana is magic, pure and simple. That's why many Teachers say, "Just do it." The practice itself will make it happen. This is also why some Teachers and yogis say mantra to animals, or some Lamas try...

Re: empowerment for Dudjom Tersar Ngondro

The short Dudjom Tersar ngon-dro is wonderful. Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche was Guru Rinpoche's regent in this time. (some say Guru Rinpoche Himself.) There have been many great Lamas in the last 100 years, but Dudjom Rinpoche is most definitely one of the very greatest. So if you have any inclination of ...

Re: malas (again)

"None of this matters." Depends on Your Teacher and what practice you are doing. There are terma practices where there are very specific instructions on exactly what kind of mala to use as well as all the various other samaya instruments and substances involved. Especially when it comes to the lay-t...

Re: New terma and their continuation outside of a lineage.

Greg, I understand what you are saying and I agree with you that a living Teacher with Whom one has a relationship in meat-space is extremely important, at least for many practitioners. (We've been over this issue before on this forum.) However, I'd like to Devil's advocate about terma after the Ter...

Re: Tibetan Yogis

"someone who meditate in caves and is determined to attain enlightenment" My guess, and it only a guess, would be Drigung and Drukpa Kagyud if you're talking about percentage of members of those lineages, not absolute numbers. If we're only talking about the four major sects, then I would say Kagyud...

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

Yes, accumulating wealth consumes merit. Everything that comes to us is due to the ripening of our karma, good or bad.

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

Obviously I am still thinking about this thread. Besides practicing the Dharma as much as possible in order to generate as much merit as possible and being frugal in our use of resources, thus conserving our merit, there are a couple of specifics I would like to add. 1. After generating even the sli...

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

In terms of merit in the world, one should also take into account the consumption of merit through over-indulgence. Everything we consume is the result of merit. So we can slow down the exhaustion of merit by consuming less. Once Choje Rinpoche was in a men's room with His Teacher Sog-tshe Rinpoche....

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

Nyig-mai du , degenerate times, are the result of the decrease in merit of the beings that live in those times and at that place. So the Buddhist answer to the OP's question is to generate as much merit as possible and to decrease and purify as much demerit as possible by whatever means possible de...

I think clarifying what you think you will get out of a three-year retreat is hugely important in helping you decide if such a retreat is right for you.

Re: Jobs that serve alcohol?

Mipham Fan, Yes, you're right. In Tulzhug Lingpa's pamphlet, He makes it clear that one has to have reached a certain spiritual level before indulging in alcohol. He must've figured He was at that level. Don't have time now to quote from that pamphlet on this -- getting ready for tshog. Maybe will h...

"And the fifth precept with respect to laypeople is really the fourth, actually, since if you do not forgo drinking alcohol, you also do not possess the precept of avoiding sexual misconduct (on the theory that the former will lead to the latter)." Apropos of this, there's a Lama, maybe Kagyud, (Who...

Re: Jobs that serve alcohol?

According to Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen, the tshog chang is amrit and not/no longer alcohol. So it does not violate the fifth precept.
