Re: malas (again)

"None of this matters." Depends on Your Teacher and what practice you are doing. There are terma practices where there are very specific instructions on exactly what kind of mala to use as well as all the various other samaya instruments and substances involved. Especially when it comes to the lay-t...

Re: New terma and their continuation outside of a lineage.

Greg, I understand what you are saying and I agree with you that a living Teacher with Whom one has a relationship in meat-space is extremely important, at least for many practitioners. (We've been over this issue before on this forum.) However, I'd like to Devil's advocate about terma after the Ter...

Re: Tibetan Yogis

"someone who meditate in caves and is determined to attain enlightenment" My guess, and it only a guess, would be Drigung and Drukpa Kagyud if you're talking about percentage of members of those lineages, not absolute numbers. If we're only talking about the four major sects, then I would say Kagyud...

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

Yes, accumulating wealth consumes merit. Everything that comes to us is due to the ripening of our karma, good or bad.

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

Obviously I am still thinking about this thread. Besides practicing the Dharma as much as possible in order to generate as much merit as possible and being frugal in our use of resources, thus conserving our merit, there are a couple of specifics I would like to add. 1. After generating even the sli...

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

In terms of merit in the world, one should also take into account the consumption of merit through over-indulgence. Everything we consume is the result of merit. So we can slow down the exhaustion of merit by consuming less. Once Choje Rinpoche was in a men's room with His Teacher Sog-tshe Rinpoche....

Re: If the bad times are coming, what to do?

Nyig-mai du , degenerate times, are the result of the decrease in merit of the beings that live in those times and at that place. So the Buddhist answer to the OP's question is to generate as much merit as possible and to decrease and purify as much demerit as possible by whatever means possible de...

Re: three year retreat experiences?

I think clarifying what you think you will get out of a three-year retreat is hugely important in helping you decide if such a retreat is right for you.

Re: Jobs that serve alcohol?

Mipham Fan, Yes, you're right. In Tulzhug Lingpa's pamphlet, He makes it clear that one has to have reached a certain spiritual level before indulging in alcohol. He must've figured He was at that level. Don't have time now to quote from that pamphlet on this -- getting ready for tshog. Maybe will h...

Re: Jobs that serve alcohol?

"And the fifth precept with respect to laypeople is really the fourth, actually, since if you do not forgo drinking alcohol, you also do not possess the precept of avoiding sexual misconduct (on the theory that the former will lead to the latter)." Apropos of this, there's a Lama, maybe Kagyud, (Who...

Re: Jobs that serve alcohol?

According to Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen, the tshog chang is amrit and not/no longer alcohol. So it does not violate the fifth precept.

Re: Jobs that serve alcohol?

Tulzhug Lingpa, a.k.a. Duddul Rolpai Dorje, a well-known Terton of the mid-20th century and student of both H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, and Chatral Sangay Dorje, wrote a small book on the importance of avoiding alcohol for Buddhist practitioners -- The Youthful Armor for Those Who Wan...

Re: Jobs that serve alcohol?

Guru Rinpoche said something to the effect that, "My view is higher than the sky but my attention to karma is as fine as flour." (Sorry, don't have the exact words.) So, what do you think Guru Rinpoche would say about making, selling, serving, or delivering alcohol for the purpose of earning one's p...

Re: Difficulty doing Manjushri practices and prayers due to negative association

To add to my above post, I was speaking about this issue with one of my Teachers a few weeks ago while on a long road-trip together. She said that, even if one is an authentic Tulku and recognized and enthroned as such, if the Tulku is not trained properly and thoroughly as a youth, They can be "spo...

Re: Difficulty doing Manjushri practices and prayers due to negative association

"Go meet HH Sakya Trizin, Mañjuśṛī in person, and receive Mañjuśṛī practice from him." I second this piece of advice. Many Lamas also say H.H. Sakya Trizin is Guru Rinpoche in person. Impossible to go wrong with this Guru. BTW, King Trisong Deutsen was also considered an emanation of Manjushri and, ...

Re: Best location for naga puja

Just a story about Nagas and dams: Once I went with Sangyum Kamala (Chatral Sangay Dorje Rinpoche's Sangyum) to do Naga puja. She said it would be best to go up into the mountains near the source of the local river/creek. We eventually came to a beautiful reservoir with a nice park, a majestic view,...
