Re: Mipham Rinpoche channels Weinstein:

You're welcome, it's the truth. Highest Yoga Tantra is very precious indeed and we shouldn't abandon or misuse it. When spiritual directors of religious groups engage in sexual abuse and are still permitted to remain in charge it is very refreshing to see condemnation instead of cover-up. I would i...

Re: Mipham Rinpoche channels Weinstein:

I think it's a mistake to abandon the idea of practising Highest Yoga Tantra in Western society because of the sexual misconduct of some prominent Teachers. Karmamudra has a specific purpose and is only meant to be engaged in after many generation and completion stage realisations have already been...

Re: The Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path

How important are these to Mahayana and what source text do they get it from? Thank you. The Four Noble Truths are absolutely vital. The Eightfold Path is reformulated as the three higher trainings in the Mahayana - higher moral discipline, higher concentration and higher wisdom, all higher because...

Re: Dzogchen and Mahamudra: differences and similarities

Gelugs also practise Mahamudra, but I don't know any specificities Yes, I used to. :) I was asking if there is a form of DI 'revelation' in any of the various Gelug practices. I think Malcolm has answered it - the '4th empowerment'. I don't think Gelug believes in DI. Their practice do not depend o...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

Whether one clings to the mistaken notion of existing phenomena, or to a mentally contrived generic image of emptiness, all of this is clinging to convention. Existence is not a mistaken notion, only inherent existence. The whole point of meditating on a generic image of emptiness is to stop clingi...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

For you and/or your lineage, perhaps. There are other methods which do not rely on analytical meditation. Fair enough. Well, emptiness is of course not even an object, much less an "absolute one." My words were meant to point to the "object of Madhyamaka analysis," which is the recognition of empti...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

Analytical Meditation is a tool. Yes, but it's the principal method for realising emptiness (or any object of Buddhadharma for that matter) I disagree. The "object" to be realized is the absolute object, which is the Emptiness of Phenomena. There is no bifurcation into two realizations or two objec...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

I've signed in for the first time in 3 or 4 years for this post, so, you know, I might respond on this thread, but then I sign out again..... 1. It's hard to do Tibetan Madhyamaka without sectarianism, but please try. Agreed, everyone should try. 3. The big point of difference - and what Mipham cri...

That is why I’d like to hear more from FPMT Gelugpas here on DW… and much less sect/tradition bashing. That's my position as nearly as I can express it.
Thanks for your balanced approach. I think it's sad that there aren't more Gelugpas on DW and I think that sect/tradition bashing is pointless.

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

Great, then please explain for us in what sense your interpretation of Gelugpa teachings are "traditional". The point being made here by others is that you represent a minority position not particularly consistent with the historic or contemporary Gelugpa mainstream. Rather than addressing that poi...

now we are getting somewhere. We really aren't. Back to Dharma...... We are talking about the Dharma. We haven't left the topic. Something that can be observed in these recurring debates, TKPF, is that you're very happy bashing Dzogchen on the basis of Tsongkhapa's views (or rather, your reading of...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

What is in fact a very unconventional thing, is to promote gyalpo practice, a practice which the many who posses the eyes of wisdom have spoken against. You see gyalpo, I see an emanation of Manjushri Je Tsongkhapa. Many who possess the eye of wisdom have spoken in favour of the practice. I could g...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

It's fine, I understand that everybody has a fixed view about this. It's unreconcilable.

I guess it's the karma of the tradition, mainly due to the 5th Dalai Lama's sectarian suppression of other traditions.
What goes around comes around, religion and politics should never be mixed.

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

Distinguishing between the political quagmire that people like Pabonkha put modern Gelugpas in and the dharma itself is very important. How can anyone gain realizations by dissing their Root and Lineage Gurus? All Gelugpas are connected to these great Masters who were blameless. They are the source...

Distinguishing between the political quagmire that people like Pabonkha put modern Gelugpas in and the dharma itself is very important. I'm sorry, but the modern problems with the Gelugpa lineage are not the fault of great masters like Trijang Rinpoche and Pabongkha Rinpoche but due to modern polit...

Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

It was actually a very specific question: How to Gelugpas deal with Mipham? His arguments are very specific, I assume their responses are also very specific. In my experience, the Gelug school doesn't deal with Mipham. He simply isn't studied at an institutional level. For individuals, some try to ...

You chose to link the theory under discussion with the actual practices you and others follow as 'method'. I was talking about the teachings on faith, rebirth, karma, love, compassion, bodhichitta, concentration, etc - in other words, the hidden meaning of Buddha's Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. I was...
