Re: Why doesn’t Ikeda inscribe his own gohonzon?

Its kind of endearing when you hear an old Japanese lady say it. It's a casual and intimate way to speak. The "Go" at the front is an honorific prefix so the honorific sense of "sama" is redundant. The "O" in front of Daimoku is also an honorfic prefix. The honor or importance is already implied in...

Re: Hearing the Buddha's Name

If I may, here is another video of chanting Namu Myoho Renge Kyo. It is a Nichiren Shu video of Odaimoku chanting accompanied by mokusho. https://youtu.be/3QFbMhEi_qg It's just over 15 minutes long - a nice length for daily practice. May we purify our minds, limit our desires, learn to be content, f...

Re: Aragyo - Two weeks have passed

On 10th February, the Aragyō-sō (Aragyo Monks) emerged from the confines of Aragyo after 100 days of hard practice and chanting the Lotus Sutra. Here is a video of Jōman-e: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuwf5jLXioM May they use their practice and any fruits they may have gained to help many suffer...

Aragyo - Two weeks have passed

Today is 14th November. It has now been two weeks since the start of the “Dai Aragyō”. The Nichiren Shū Dai Aragyō is a practice with a very long history dating back hundreds of years. It is held at Nakayama Hokekyoji temple in Japan once a year. “Dai” (大) means “Great”; “Ara” (荒) means hard or roug...

Re: Lenge or Renge or lrenge

If I am wrong please tell me. At first for me this was a false dilemma but many sharings, and specially rev KanseKapon post, make me feel confused. Hi Maki. Sorry for this. My intention was only to add my take and some additional information to the conversation, and stimulate further discussion/tho...

Re: Lenge or Renge or lrenge

I should say, we don’t know how Nichiren Shonin pronounced the Odaimoku. It may not have been exactly the same as it is pronounced now, but we just don't know. (By the way, in Japan they have a recording of a Priest chanting the Lotus and Odaimoku from around 100 years ago, recorded on one of the ea...

Re: Lenge or Renge or lrenge

Hello all, If I may add my two pennies worth... Simply put, in Japanese there are two writing systems to show pronunciation: Hiragana and Katakana. In normal writing, Japanese uses a mix of these two phonetic systems combined with Kanji which are Chinese characters that are more like words showing m...

Thank you. Chapter 2's description of the content of enlightenment seemed like a particularly good hint for us this week.

O-Higan

Hello everyone, Today is the Autumn Equinox, and around this time we celebrate O-Higan. “O-Higan” means the “other shore”, that of enlightenment, whereas our current position is “Shigan”, the shore of non-enlightenment or delusion. In the seven days of O-Higan week we emphasise Buddhist practice and...

Second line out on the right is "Namu something bosatsu". The third line out I can't make out at all. The second line is 南無智積菩薩 Namu Chishaku Bosatsu (Prajñākūṭa Bodhisattva) Chishaku, who is the attendant of Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata, questioned Manjuśrī about the enlightenment of the dragon king's ...

Re: Gohonzon SGI

Hi Dave, Nice to see you again! Sorry it’s taken me a few days to reply to your post. About the phrases known as the “curse and blessing” phrases, which I understand are inscribed on Gohonzon in Nichiren Shoshu, actually these phrases appear on eight of the Gohonzons written by Nichiren Shonin which...

Re: Nichiren monastic morning service

Whilst strictly speaking its not part of the Hokke Senbo, it is a very popular Sutra to chant in the Tendai Shu. As the video is a "performance" for an audience (possibly a specific audience but I can't be sure), I think they have taken a somewhat artistic licence for the sake of the audience and/o...

Re: Nichiren monastic morning service

Thanks Kanse san. Taking a quick look, it looks almost identical. I noticed the kanji differs slightly. Do you know if there is anything on YouTube for this? It will be interesting to see whether the shomyo is similar. I'd guess it is different, but would still be interesting to compare. Thanks aga...

Re: Nichiren monastic morning service

I had read somewhere, a long time ago now that I can't remember where, that Nichiren schools chant the Hokke senbo. Is this true Kanse-san? Hello Seishin Shonin, The Hokke Senbo Service is practised in Nichiren Shu (I don't know about other schools - I'd assume not in the Shoretsu lineages) at some...

Re: Nichiren monastic morning service

As Mark said, in Nichiren Shu, Priests/minister's Morning Service usually follows the standard Gongyo format, but with additional things included. One thing is that often, more of the Lotus Sutra than Hoben and Jigage is recited... The whole Threefold Lotus Sutra 法華三部経 or the Lotus Sutra may be read...
