Re: Climate change to cause global beer shortage, study says

I am still surprised that nothing is really being done.,. I am afraid we are done for. Instead of focusing on this and doing some proper change we are distracted by stupid stuff.

Re: What a buddhist tradition did you choose and why?

Hello, I'm looking for the right buddhist tradition for me and I can't decide, so pleas help me by answering to my question. Thank you for everything! There was a nice discussion topic that we should not choose tradition but a teacher. So yeah. After few years studying under ChNN I realized it does...

Re: Why did you choose vajrayana buddhism?

Well, I wanted to go for zen at first tbh. It had more magic and vajrayana was confusing at the beginning. However, there was no zen center near me only two small vajrayana groups and so I studied it more and it actually clicked with me and I received teachings from vajrayana tradition. I think it i...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

As others in this thread have said, as far as I know it's always been clear that there is only one Karmapa at a time in terms of the function. Of course there may be other emanations but they wouldn't perform the function of the Karmapa. But those are just thoughts from somebody on the internet, so...

Re: How to join a buddhist monastery?

second thing is that in my really humble opinion it's better to find a teacher first and establish a good connection with him before making attempts to be a monk. and last thing you don't have to be a monk to be happy. imho buddhism show us that happiness which relies on external conditions - be it...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

I wonder if Zen is doing well because it was popularised back in the hippy days and has had more time to establish. I was maybe more typical in finding it through martial arts - we created a Dojo with a Zendo above it back in the 1990's. I didn't have time to get into it properly though as work too...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

Very few cultures arriving in the 'West' (pretty loose in itself) have an easy integration, let alone those bringing a challenge to a host religion. This is, of course, compounded by the newcomers' reactions to western culture and maybe also the freedoms presented. Is an Imam less likely to fall fr...

Context is everything. Some people in modern society pay a lot of money to be beaten with a cane.

Maybe Buddhadharma needs some safe words?

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

We might want to consider - maybe the ideals of Buddhist practice we hold up for people should be Anathapindika and Vimalakirti instead of Milarepa and Bodhidharma. :good: This is important! Just like it is important for us to debate what is a sexual misconduct for a buddhist (nowadays we have so m...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

Yes, it is so far quite succesful. Yes there are many problems as we all can see, but if we look at our minds and and our behaviour we can see at least a small change that took place. And that is important. We are still finding our way how to bring practice into our lives. Things here are different....

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

AFAIK the DWB has no official statement to it. DWB buddhist groups I follow on FB didn't even share the news. Soo I am very interested in it. After all Ole kinda built his reputation around the whole two karmapas situation. But I do believe (or hope) that his devotion towards Karmapa is bigger than ...

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

Like it or not Dharma in the West is failing. You may attempt to stay in a bubble but many high Lamas no longer bother with North America. Fixing problems means facing them. All religions in NA have been steadily graying for decades. People aren't that interested and I see no reason to stuff it dow...

Re: Amoghasiddhi Mantra?

Anyone know the mantra or dharani of Amoghasiddhi? I am trying to tame my jealousy and envy among school rivals, but Akshobhya is the closest for quelling hatred. Good you try to do sth about it, but for example mani or tara mantra are enough. Tara saves us from 8 fears and also ourselves. But as w...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

I think that Ogyen Trinley’s health was only part of the reason he was in the US. I think he was so frustrated by the Indian Govt’s control over his movements both in India and internationally, he decided to leave for a while. As a refugee he would have had to rely on Indian travel documents and se...

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful. The reincarnation of masses of Tibetans in the West after the destruction of Tibet were ideal circumstances. They are old and Dharma was already dwindling before all these scandals. Judging by the fervent demands I get from Dharma centres for mo...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Here is the English transcript of the joint statement: His Holiness Ogyen Trinley Dorje and His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje met over the last few days at a rural location in France. Their purpose was to get to know each other personally. They also discussed how they might work together to preserve...

Re: Lama X is in the neighbourhood next weekend

Even with ChNN people wanted to receive transmissions 'in person' and of course for most Vajrayana empowerments that is the only way, so it is essential to attend. But you don't need a group setting to practice, of course. Occasionally I like to go to a group, but generally I really don't like grou...

Re: Lama X is in the neighbourhood next weekend

because Lama X is in the neighbourhood next weekend. This statement is worthy of it's own thread. We have sort of set up this situation. Why? Visa only lets the lama stay for so long, that's part of it- but often then the lama may travel around and teach in a different town each week-some of it is ...
