Re: It’s incumbent on all of us to think better

I admit, I avoided this topic to begin with as I feared it might awaken my instinct that maybe I can do better than I am. Oh well, I acknowledge it is so and am willing to dig down another spit to try and do better for myself and others. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lGGwavt1GIEd_3joq87ES1MMy6uH...

Re: End of suffering

I would be wary of taking any specific advice on what to practice online. In a more general sense, which I believe to be true in Buddhism and generally, if you want to develop certain qualities, one of the best ways to nurture that is to hang out with people who already embody these qualities. Are t...

Re: Ngakpa International - Vajrayana Training

I can dig Malcolm's argument up to a point. Credentials are nice to have, but not all who have them are accomplished. And conversely not all who are accomplished will have credentials. While it is something I would never entirely ignore, and think should always be valid to ask why a given teacher mi...

I am talking about the integrity of the process. Since no one can read her mind, the apparent circumstances matter for this. A respected a...

It doesn't matter if she is innocent. The accused should never sit on their own judging panel. This is basic stuff. If this thread has its facts right, she is not sitting on her own judgment. She is helping with the transition. Under ideal circumstances, who would you nominate to manage the transit...

It doesn't matter if she is innocent. The accused should never sit on their own judging panel. This is basic stuff. It is not a judging panel. It is not illegal to say: "I don't believe you". Especially to a person who, according to a personal account of a member here, has made false accusations in...

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

Going back now the the actual point of discussion raised now that it has been established, with much thunder, that it is not libellous nor unfounded to ask this question: What do folks think about the comments related to Pema Chodron, that she victim-shamed an abuse victim and is also on the so-call...

Re: Post-awakening cultivation in Zen

many Tang dynasty Zen texts emphasize sudden awakening and suggest that it is totally realized in an instant I am not sure I agree with that. The Sudden/Gradual dichotomy is not so much about whether you cross the finishing line immediately, as it is about how you do it. The sudden path is about ta...

Re: Buddhahood of Insentient Beings Exclusively East-Asian?

The thesis originated with Jizang, one of the seminal masters of the Sanlun/Madhyamika tradition, who originally wrote of it: “Not only sentient beings have buddha-nature; grasses and trees also have buddha-nature” Perhaps the most striking thing here is not so much positing that "grasses and trees ...

My question is about Koans and Kensho. I have solved a few Koans and received verification from a Zen master that because of distance I currently don't have access to. After solving these Koans, I discovered that I also knew the solutions to a lot of other related Koans. Although, there are many mo...

Re: Masters in whose presence peace is experienced?

I experienced it frequently, and saw it frequently happen to lots of people as well, around Ajahn Pannavado. He's dead now though. But it is very much a thing. Have heard similar stories from others in the presence of other teachers.

Re: Practise to recall past incarnations

I don't know why past life recall gets such a bad rep in modern Buddhism. I think the book referenced above by ajahn brahm gives good advice: These recollections of past lives qualify as deep insight for four reasons. First, the Buddha called them the first of the “threefold knowledges” (tevijjā) (M...

I think this fails the test on the five precepts being common sense practices, who have a distinct moral character whose harmfulness when broken are readily observable. I am not inherently opposed to practices with magic assumptions, but the five precepts follow a more fundamental and universal stan...

Re: doctrinal unity

While there are differences in doctrinal emphasis (and practices) between the lineages, I think there is a fair degree of doctrinal unity. What I meant is the absence of a requirement to comply with a specific set of doctrines within the various organisations. It can be said that there is a fair de...
