Re: Zazen and breathing
Would you say the same of other beliefs, like the five elements and the forces of yin and yang? Then Zou Yan might be that "some dude". But there are several other "energy" views out there, so just as combination with Chinese concepts can be acceptable, we might as well integrate readily available ...

Re: Zazen and breathing
Tradition is no proof, otherwise the Vedas should be accepted as well. Tradition and living lineage is not the same thing. At least not in the sense that the pali canon uses the term. Some did, some did not, and some rejected them. So, instead of relying on one's choice of great masters, why not on...

Re: Zazen and breathing
Scholars have their motivations of course. But other people seem largely motivated by their own affinities/aversions. For example, people who study Zen for some years but never learned or heard about such practices are hesitant to admit that perhaps their lineages lost something , or didn't preserv...

Re: "Wild Wild Country" - Osho documentary on Netflix
I think Osho has some sort of spiritual awakening, then made the cardinal sin of thinking this was the end of the matter and that all actions of his from there on out were enlightened actions. His own carte Blanche for complete spiritual bypass and utter lack of morality. Quite sad really.

Re: Everybody speaks about samaya, but nobody knows what it is.
It is a set of commitments one makes to the guru, one's vajra siblings, and the path in general. Though they are in fact secret, they are openly discussed by many people here all the time. karma-mechanically speaking, it is more than that though, right? What role do they play as an essential compon...

Re: Everybody speaks about samaya, but nobody knows what it is.
I do wonder why it is so difficult to give a straightforward explanation of it. It seems like something that ought to be taken on with clear comprehension. The samaya vows are actually secret and technically, should only be explained during or after the empowerment. M Ok, so that's the content of S...

Re: Everybody speaks about samaya, but nobody knows what it is.
Frankly, the only way to understand samaya is to receive empowerment and practice assiduously . Just as an example, in Sarma practices one recites the various aspects and vows of Samaya during "self-empowerment" rituals, and these are the same as those given during the empowerment. One of the commo...

Re: The Mahayana Is Not Diluted Theravada.
It is quite unlikely that the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra is a composition of Nāgārjuna. See Bronkhorst, Language and Reality: On an Episode in Indian Thought , from page 56 on. Apologies. I was simply going with a traditional attribution. We can call him Pseudo-Nāgārjuna until there is consensus on w...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect
Nāgārāja Sāgara's daughter first transforms her gender from female and male in Shariputra's presence, then he (formerly she) goes off the the world system Vimala and attains Buddhahood. It is really quite clear in the text. In Sariputra's perception. Yes, in the undistorted, i.e., veridical direct ...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect
Commensurate means equivalent. Buddhanature is not equivalent to buddhahood. [semantic nazi]Not quite, but close enough I guess for the purpose of this discussion. I'd say the degree of equivalency between 'commensurate' and 'equivalent' is about commensurate with the degree of equivalence between ...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect
This is actually a Lotus Sutra school teaching attributable to Zhiyi, and its not just Mappo - its all times. And actually, this is the message of the Lotus Sutra itself. Its just that in Mappo, this sublime teaching is most appropriate. Sound familiar? Right, I don't accept either Zhiyi;s interpre...

Apart from having issues with the accuracy of the translation you are using (Kumarajiva) What issues do you have with Kumarajiva? Last I checked, most scholars who expressed doubts about the quality of his translations did so because they compared his translations to later sanskrit versions of thos...

Re: Has the Heart Sutra Been Finally Proven as Chinese Apocrypha?
He didn't say Nagarjuna was a closet Theravadin. He said he was probably thoroughly familiar with it. While the exact quote of a Theravada association probably comes from an interview with him, there are quotes in his writings that attempt to make the case that he was not in fact a Mahayani. In fac...

Re: Has the Heart Sutra Been Finally Proven as Chinese Apocrypha?
seems out of touch- whatever the evidence might be to make such an argument, it assumes that thousands of realized teachers utilizing this teaching have been mistaken Jake How are they supposed to know if it is apocrypha? I don't think either scenario changes the validity of the message. Which is a...

Re: Question about transmission and pointing-out instructions
A psychotherapist friend who has a deep background in Zen said he's come to believe after decades of work with Buddhist practitioners that spiritual health and psychological health are really quite different, that one doesn't at all necessarily follow the other. In particular, he thinks, people who...
