Re: Psychoanalysis

There are very few exclusive practitioners of Psychoanalysis anymore, the trend has moved away from exclusive practices anyway, but last I looked Pyschoanalytic practitioners are the literally the smallest part of the pie. More than anything else, the mental health world has moved into a time where ...

Nope.

Nope. But it is nice to blame our parents.

Talk therapy is useless.

Mere proliferation. And, it is not as free as you might think.

Probably not.

It's all bollocks, just another way to separate fools from their money.
Cool story bro

Re: Psychoanalysis

Yeah. Sure there are not as many Freudian practitioners of psychoanalysis as there used to be (though they are not as extinct as one might think either) but the fundamentals of psychoanalysis are as current as ever. Psychoanalysis is bollocks. It is not scientific, it is based on the fantasies of o...

Re: Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is not taken very seriously any more That's like saying the bible is not taken very seriously any more, because all it contains are fairy tales. Well, quite the opposite, many people take the bible very, very seriously. Any many, many Western therapists are so familiar with so many f...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

I wonder if Zen is doing well because it was popularised back in the hippy days and has had more time to establish. I was maybe more typical in finding it through martial arts - we created a Dojo with a Zendo above it back in the 1990's. I didn't have time to get into it properly though as work too...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

We need a strong subculture of Western Buddhist nomads. You're talking about tumbleweed yogis. They depend on the settled communities for their support. They've always been a counter-culture. You need the community householders to support that. Horse before the cart. Ajahn Chah once asked Ajahn sum...

If the proposed solution is to reincarnate in Asia, I would suggest pureland practice might b more reliable and pay greater dividends.

Re: Best winter home for retired Buddhists?

Chiang Mai seems to be the favourite choice. I'll try and get there soon to check it out. I thought Taiwan/Taipei might get some love. Bangkok might be a great travel hub for a year or two before settling down. Can foreigners buy condos in Chiang Mai like you can in Bangkok? Maybe it is better to r...

Re: Best winter home for retired Buddhists?

I would say Chiang Mai is definitely more relaxed and pleasant than Bangkok.

You should be able to find some western forest monk in the surrounding area too if that's your thing, although most of them are down in Isan.

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

An addendum to my post above. Until Enlightenment, we are all in psychological Denial about some aspect of our lives, And the more important the issue is to us, the more Denial is a temptation. CTR and Mukpo are very important to Pema Chodron. It would be understandable if she can only approach the...

I feel that it is important to remember that whatever moral failings she had and may presently have, none of them are in fact her true nature. Their true nature is: subject to change according to causes and conditions. It is easier to recognise in thoughts arising on the cushion but for applying dha...

I admit, I avoided this topic to begin with as I feared it might awaken my instinct that maybe I can do better than I am. Oh well, I acknowledge it is so and am willing to dig down another spit to try and do better for myself and others. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lGGwavt1GIEd_3joq87ES1MMy6uH...

Re: End of suffering

I would be wary of taking any specific advice on what to practice online. In a more general sense, which I believe to be true in Buddhism and generally, if you want to develop certain qualities, one of the best ways to nurture that is to hang out with people who already embody these qualities. Are t...

Re: Ngakpa International - Vajrayana Training

I can dig Malcolm's argument up to a point. Credentials are nice to have, but not all who have them are accomplished. And conversely not all who are accomplished will have credentials. While it is something I would never entirely ignore, and think should always be valid to ask why a given teacher mi...

It doesn't matter if she is innocent. The accused should never sit on their own judging panel. This is basic stuff. If this thread has its facts right, she is not sitting on her own judgment. She is helping with the transition. Under ideal circumstances, who would you nominate to manage the transit...

It doesn't matter if she is innocent. The accused should never sit on their own judging panel. This is basic stuff. It is not a judging panel. It is not illegal to say: "I don't believe you".
