Re: New rule: quote & comment?

This idea doesn't work for me. If I want to comment on a quote from someone else, it seems natural, logical and courteous to supply the context for the comment (the quote) before supplying the comment. When I've seen it the other way around - comment, then quote - I've ended up reading the comment, ...

Re: Change to lay vows - sexual misconduct

Yup, as Javier says. I did a little bit of digging and it seems there is not much in sutras about these different ways to have sex. It mostly seems to be a thing of mahayana authors who really love enumerating and from them Gampopa got it and from him the tibetan buddhists got it, in general. Like ...

Re: Is it worth it to resist your well-deserved bad karma?

2. In the long run, of course, not determinism. In the immediate future, of course, determinism. What do you mean by this? Are you saying that how I react to any particular circumstance next week e.g. being robbed, is already determined? If that is what you mean, then I disagree and would argue tha...

Re: Canada has a terrible system of government?

The Canadian healthcare system has its flaws, like any other system, and everyone pays for it in taxes. It's not a liberal paradise. Hmmm, the old American bugbear of a socialised healthcare. Almost every developed nation provides some form of socialised healthcare, and yes that is paid for by taxe...

Re: Canada has a terrible system of government?

He is blending facts, half-facts, opinions and untruths and delivering them as an overwhelming onslaught to overcome the critical faculties of his listeners. Reminds me of Ben Shapiro - same fast delivery, same lack of accuracy or nuanced understanding. I'll have to look into, point by point, the i...

Re: Canada has a terrible system of government?

This video is one Canadian's critique of his country's political system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU_CuvSOupU If you are a left-leaning American like myself, you might be very dissatisfied with our president and the Republicans in Congress right now. Instead of just insisting that we all mov...

The background “music” was horrible and distracting. I ended up turning the sound off and the subtitles on.

Re: Socialism & Communism

Monarchs are just organized crime with magic hats. King Salman of Saud sawing up Khashoggi is a perfect example. By what right do they make a kingdom their subjects? A King makes everyone they control defacto slaves. You like slavery, but only if it's traditional and includes a magic hat? Imho very...

Re: what Torma tradition?

Kalarupa is another deity who isn't offered padyam - the explanation I was given was offering water to clean his feet would be in some way seeking to negate his trampling of enemies.

I have read that this practise is associated with/was revealed by Dagom Rinpoche. Dagom Rinpoche was a practioner of a certain controversial gyalpo who shall not be mentioned. As such, information on this practice on the internet seems chiefly available from sites associated with followers of this g...

It should be be noted that Garfield himself in the introduction to Ocean of Reasoning: A Great Commentary on Nagarjuna's Mulamadhyamakakarika , explained that he had made translation errors in The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way: Nāgārjuna's Mūlamadhyamakakārikā , and that his translation of th...

Re: Multiple reincarnations

I'm sure I've read His Holiness somewhere explaining that its possible for someone closely associated with a particular teacher - his attendant, say - to take rebirth in the role of that teacher's next tulku, to continue their work. In the same way that Brahma is used to denote an individual deva, b...

Re: Animal Activist: Let Mosquitoes Bite You As They Are "Mothers" Trying To Feed Their Babies

I don't mind mosquitoes feeding on me... but the the allergic reaction I have to their bite afterward is not fun! One bite can take upwards of 3 weeks to heal, and sometimes I have to take antibiotics too. As a child, mosquitoes bites didn't worry me, but I became allergic as I got older. Now, I try...

Re: What is Mount Meru?

Mythic and poetic is much closer to the ineffable direct experience of reality. This is the reason why arts (music, poetry, dance) exist in the first place. I simply disagree with you I'm afraid. Myths and poems are also conceptual, dualistic. They are no closer to a direct realisation of reality t...

Re: Multiple reincarnations

I have been taught that karma is individual - so rather than several rebirths, it would have to be several emanations. Having several emanations supposes a degree of spiritual attainment that I don't associate with, say, Princess Diana, but for the 2nd Dalai Lama, not a problem.

Re: What is Mount Meru?

Or as the Dalai Lama said, if Buddhism and science disagree, science should be deferred to. Unfortunately there exists a "half life of science". Should Buddhism continuously adapt to ever changing scientific theories and views? Like: as long as Darwinism and the principles of accidentality are the ...
