Re: Turkey practices?

Thanksgiving is about to come up, what practices are we to do to liberate all these turkeys? Sorry for spamming, but I'm trying to find out the Mahayana way of liberation for these sentient beings. 1. Don't eat one. 2. Say mantras and/or prayers for them. As with all things, you do what you can and...

Do you find that to be a good description?
Reading that, I would say that the best description is "moldy tea".
I tried it once. Yes, that would be an accurate description!

A nice Darjeeling (= Dorje Ling) for me, please.

Re: Introduction (and in need of some advice)

Welcome! My feeling is that over-intellectualization can be a hindrance. Practise is better. Not that there is anything wrong with pursuing an academic degree in Buddhist Studies. I worked on a BA in Eastern Religions (the nearest thing that university offered to Buddhist Studies) years ago. You wil...

Re: Winter festivities

For me Christmas is cooking and eating... And NOT eating all those chocolates and cookies people bring. It's a habit were I live that every visitor brings some chocolate for the children. But they do not eat it. If you have a problem with too much chocolate, I'll take care of that for ...

Re: Nothing further to seek...

Everywhere! If samsara is nirvana and nirvana is perfect, then it must follow that samsara is perfect also. This is a common misunderstanding, similar to saying that we are already enlightened so there is no need to practise. Samsara and nirvana refer to the same reality. It is called nirvana when ...

Re: time, space and the universe

The standard scientific/cosmological view of space is that it changes: it expands in response to forces that are not yet fully understood. Anything that changes in response to causes and conditions is, by definition, conditioned.

Re: Nothing further to seek...

What you are describing IS narcissism. It is true that we already have Buddhanature within us. So in that sense, there is nothing further to acquire. But that enlightened nature is covered up by ignorance and delusion. To be fully enlightened, we must get rid of those. So although there is nothing t...

Re: Shakyamuni and bodhisattva vow

Thomas- then what about the Jatakas, and all the places in the Pali canon where he talks about before was the Buddha and he calls himself the bodhisatta? That’s where the whole bodhisattva vow comes from OP- because the Mahāyāna doesn’t equate buddhahood with cessation The word "bodhisattva" has di...

Re: Why sansara exists

I know that we are in samsara from time without beginning. May be the better question should be - what happened, that we appeared in samsara?? Thank for your answers guys, I know I have difficult questions, but I can find answers nowhere in books :) What happened? Nothing. The appearance of samsara...

Re: Rescue Pets

Liesl, a 12 year old tabby cat, was found as a kitten in a feral colony under a community hall. Though young when we adopted her, she was already old enough to be permanently feral. She does not get along well with other cats, tolerating them very grudgingly. My wife is the only person who can appro...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

I'm close with someone who was vegetarian for years and all her Western medical blood tests showed she was in perfect health, no deficiencies. However she felt extremely weak, would almost faint when blood was drawn from weakness afterwards, was extremely vulnerable to altitude sickness at slight r...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

Hehe.. yeah I only asked because that seems to be (not saying in your case) a blindspot in the general vegan approach: absolutely no animal based food or clothing or furniture or medicine, etc. And often times there can be an argumentative intensity in trying to shame people who eat meat or dairy (...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

I had my cholesterol checked recently as part of a routine checkup. My doctor said she had never see anyone get levels as low as mine in anyone my age without the use of statin drugs. Dear KathyLauren, do you have any thoughts about the use of oil in cooking and whether to eat a lot of raw foods in...

No, they are not. I asked them if they would be willing to do so, but they declined. I am not going to force my beliefs on them.

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

] Given that I used to eat extreme amounts of meat, it's a miracle that I am now a vegetarian, let alone a vegan. My only sources of animal protein are nonfat, cholesterol-free dairy and egg whites, and my arteries are already thanking me. I had my cholesterol checked recently as part of a routine c...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

Consider this: Imagine a cotton farmer who still keeps slaves to work his farm. He takes good care of them. They live in nice, clean, well-built houses that he provides. They have good, nutritious, tasty food, and he provides them with good clothing. He needs them to be healthy for work, so he ensur...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

I don't doubt it can be hard to be on the Vegan side and be misunderstood, but I think if you pay attention to how a few of your louder compatriots act towards practitioners who don't share their dietary choices, it becomes pretty obvious it's a two-way street. You are right, there are some like th...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

I have been a Buddhist for nearly 40 years, a vegetarian for 35 years and a vegan for 20 years. I have hung out on vegan, vegetarian and Buuddhist discussion forums since the very early days of the world-wide web, and have seen a lot (I mean a **LOT**) of dust-ups on this topic. I can honestly say t...

Re: Killing precept includes plants?

So, does this mean monks can't harvest vegetables or fruits? Why do I see monks who grow and harvest vegetables? Are they violating the precept? Thanks, YN People, even monks, have to eat something. So which generates worse karma: killing a sentient animal or killing a plant whose sentience is dubi...
