Re: So, Anthony Bourdain...

I never heard of Anthony Bourdain while he was alive. Still, any suicide is a tragedy. I know too many people who have been out on that ledge, believing that the only way to end their pain is to end their life. Too often, I have sent panicked messages: "Does anyone know how to contact...?" I haven't...

Re: "Mercy" killing of a dying animal - moral doubts

I do not think the prohibition on killing is absolute. It may be close to absolute, but not quite there. It is true that we have no knowledge of what awaits another being after death. But whatever awaits it, we do not have the ability to influence it. You can't alter another being's karma. So what a...

Re: Do we loose our identity when we die?

Define "identity". What part of you is your identity?

The Buddha expressly denied the existence of a self. You can't lose your self/identity because you never had one in the first place.

Re: How do you know you're not just making karma worse??

How do you know you're not just making things worse thinking you're making things better (good intentions and all that jazz)??? You don't. You do your best. You learn the "rules" of ethical conduct, you practise meditation, you act, and then you take your chances. Intentions matter, so if you are d...

Re: First four of six perfections

Paying attention to strong inner feelings and emotions that do not change would be a good way to find your true self. If something you are doing feels fake or forced, it is not part of your true self. Finding authenticity is difficult, and is a task easily pre-empted by the minutae of daily life. T...

Re: First four of six perfections

Pretending to be someone other than your true self will impair everything you do to some extent. And often, we are not aware of the pretense, which is why it is such a challenge. Pretend to be someone other than ones true self, can you give me an example of that? And how can people find their true ...

Re: First four of six perfections

Tom, I think you are getting the ultimate nature of reality and the conventional view of reality confused. The true nature of reality is that nothing has any inherent existence, and that no perceived object (including people) has any entity that can be called a self. This is all very nice. Being abl...

Re: First four of six perfections

Hello again, The six perfections of Buddhism typically map to the three practice areas of Buddhism: ethics meditation and wisdom. So the first four (sometimes under other names of similar meaning), are Buddhist ethics. They are: Generosity Discipline Patience Moral strength Question: are there othe...

Re: From The North Pole To Rome.

The reality is that my eldest granddaughter did not see snow until she was in her teens. When was a kid growing up in Glasgow, Scotland in the early 1960s, we might see one snowfall a winter. If there was a 1" accumulation, that was considered a heavy snowfall. And it usually melted by supper time....

Re: Dog thread

I hope all you dog lovers clean up after your pets, don't let them bark all night, don't assume that everyone loves them as much as you do, and don't let them off the leash in the back country. Otherwise, they are no more than extensions of your selfish egos. Totally agree. We clean up after her, s...

Re: What is a Woman?

The ignorance in this thread is astounding. As is the obviousness of the inner circles on this community, but hey don't let me interfere. This is why I quit posting here as much, this place is a cesspool of angst, and veiled aggression. TBH, I see it going the way of E-Sangha. It's actually pretty ...

Again, I Stopped reading here.
Well, you are hardly going to become more informed whth that attitude, are you?

I should have expected that attitude from a man in a thread titled "What is a woman".

Re: What is a Woman?

So let's recap in a more simple format. Your response, like identities, has no inherent existence in ultimate reality, and can therefore be dismissed. However, in the world of dependently arising phenomena, gender identity is not an arbitrary choice. It is rooted in biology. The brain has gender - ...

Indeed. I would highly recommend procuring some and trying out your lovers hormone profile. A caution though. Testosterone is somewhat addictive and perhaps the best cure for PMS. You may not wish to go back. Actually, running a human brain on the wrong hormones typically produces unpleasant result...

Re: What is a Woman?

Pretty simple... Biologically a female is a biological entity with two X chromosomes. While a male has a XY chromosome combination. (Sorry, there are only two known sexes as far as biology is concerned. No, real biologists know that it is a lot more complex than that. Here (from Scientific American...
